General Convention

Beginning this week is the 80th General Convention of The Episcopal Church (GC80), and our Bishop and deputies are on their way! The 80th General Convention is meeting July 8 - 11, 2022 at the Baltimore Convention Center in Baltimore, Maryland. Originally scheduled for July of 2021, GC80 was postponed due to the COVID-19 pandemic and later shortened from 10 legislative days to four and modifications to the number of attendees and legislative process in light of the ongoing concerns for the COVID-19 pandemic.

Bishop Skirving and our deputies will be providing their insights from General Convention, and you will find that reporting on our website and on our diocesan Facebook page

For comprehensive links for materials and details about GC80, you can visit the General Convention page via the Office of Public Affairs. The Diocese of Maryland have also produced a digital experience of welcoming the whole Episcopal Church to Baltimore. To access all of the livestreams of Convention worship (scheduled for 8:30 each morning in both houses) and sessions of the House of Bishops and House of Deputies, you can visit the GC80 Media Hub.

Prayer for a Church Convention (BCP p.818)
Almighty and everliving God, source of all wisdom and understanding, be present with those who take counsel in the 80th General Convention of The Episcopal Church for the renewal and mission of your Church. Teach us in all things to seek first your honor and glory. Guide us to perceive what is right, and grant us both the courage to pursue it and the grace to accomplish it; through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen.

Around the Diocese

We are excited to announce a new publication: the Diocesan Digest, coming soon to your inbox! While News & Notes is like your weekly church service announcements, the Diocesan Digest gives us more space to tell the stories of the people, parishes, and ministries of the Diocese. Our first issue will come out at the end of July 2022.

We want to share your stories! If you have a story from your parish or ministry that you'd like to tell, click here to submit your story; the form will walk you through everything we need to share your good news and important happenings! While we will accept stories continuously throughout the year, if you would like your story included in the first issue of the Digest, please submit your story by July 25, 2022. Please address any questions to Sara Tavela, Coordinator of Communications.
Upcoming Events
The Right Rev'd Peter James Lee (1938-2022)

We are grieved to report a death in our diocesan family: the Rt. Rev'd Peter Lee died July 2nd. Bishop Lee served East Carolina as Provisional Bishop in 2013 and 2014, until Bishop Skirving's ordination. Let us give thanks to God for the life and ministry of Bishop Peter Lee, and you may read Bishop Lee's obituary here.

Condolences to the family may be mailed to: The Lee Family, Mayo Memorial Church House, 110 W. Franklin St. Richmond, Va., 23220 or emailed to bishopsoffice@thediocese.net for forwarding to the Lee family. Please hold his wife Kristy and their family in your prayers as they grieve.
Has your parish recently or in the past done needlepoint cushions? Were you one of the stitchers? If so, we'd like your help! Church of the Advent is beginning a cushion project, and they are seeking a graph of the diocesan seal or some recommendations for graphing resources. If you can provide assistance or offer guidance, please reach out to Maria Allen. Thank you!
Nancy Rice Duvall (1936-2022)

We are saddened to report another death in our diocesan family. Nancy Rice Duvall passed away on June 19th; she had been a resident of Still Hopes Episcopal Retirement Community in South Carolina. Nancy was married to the Rt. Rev. Charles Farmer Duvall, who served in our diocese at Holy Trinity, Fayetteville from 1970-1977, and Nancy was a writer and then editor of our diocesan newspaper. Our prayers are with Nancy's family and friends as they grieve. You may read Nancy's obituary here.
