Welcome new members!

A fond welcome to the 58 new chapter members who joined the ranks of the Climate Reality Bay Area Chapter in June!  Thirty-three of these new members became Climate Reality Leaders at the June Leadership Corps training in Las Vegas. All are community members joining our ranks to make a difference in climate progress and climate justice.  We’re glad you’re here!

If you missed our New Member Welcome and Orientation last week, you can watch the replay here.

West Virginia vs. EPA: Wise words from Mr. Gore

Feeling downhearted about recent decisions coming from the Supreme Court?  You’re not alone. But check out this inspiring clarion call from Al Gore, and share it broadly with your networks.  This is the time to double down on our personal actions, influence our representatives and get our family, friends, coworkers and community to raise their voices, use their choices and votes to bring about a better future!

And know that in California, the ruling will not undercut our state climate rules.  In fact, state action is now more important than ever. “California’s Air Resources Board, which oversees the state’s efforts to reduce air pollution, told CalMatters the agency agrees that the state’s policies and regulatory agencies now play an even more critical role in the fight against climate change.”

Take an easy first step and sign on to this Climate Reality letter!

Las Vegas Training - that’s a wrap!

From June 11th to the 13th, the Climate Reality Project hosted its first live Leadership Corps training since the pandemic descended upon us in early 2020.  The event was held in Las Vegas, with 500 trainees, 50 mentors, 50 staff members and another 50 speakers masked and distanced in attendance.

As always, Al Gore personally conducted much of the training, delivering his critical message with his signature candor, expertise, humanity and conviction.  Other moments such as actor and mentor Tim Guinee’s emotional appeal to listen to our ancestors urging us not to “be wimpy” in this moment, to poet IN-Q’s performance of his poem, One Little Dot will not soon be forgotten.

Many thanks to the Bay Area chapter members who mentored and trained at this event.  And if you haven’t yet attended training, please consider doing so - it’s such a powerful experience!  Sign up here to be informed of upcoming training events.

A Brief Word From Our Committee Chairs

Y-CAT (Youth Climate Action Team) update

Y-CAT took a break May-June to focus on some self-care, AP Tests and those pesky Finals--but we're back and ready to re-organize ourselves over the summer!

You are invited to join us Friday, July 15th, 5:30-6:30 PM, for our first K-12 Climate Change & Environmental Justice Curriculum brainstorming event.  Please email Co-chairs Crystal, Josh or Alice at ycatcrba@gmail.com  for an *updated Zoom link* to the July 15th meeting and/or to be added to the Y-CAT members list.

If you are a middle, high school, or college student, or an educator, come express your opinions on the state of climate change curriculum—the good, the bad, and the ugly.  How is current teaching relevant to our everyday "climate reality?"  What are any gaps? Y-CAT will be collecting feedback to inform development of a new supplemental open source CA environmental curriculum in this coming year.

We want to hear your ideas for future topics or initiatives that you'd like to see Y-CAT mobilize on next year. We are hoping to lead chapter wide meetings on special topics that have relevance to you!

We are recruiting for more Co-chairs to lead Y-CAT in our process of a special restructuring. If interested, please email ycatcrba@gmail.com. WE NEED TO HEAR MORE YOUTH VOICES!

Hope to see you on July 15th!
Y-CAT Co-Chairs Crystal Huang, Josh Mordaunt, and Alice Sung, Adult Mentor Co-Chair

  • The Story of Stuff
    • “From its extraction through sale, use and disposal, all the stuff in our lives affects communities at home and abroad, yet most of this is hidden from view. The Story of Stuff is a 20-minute, fast-paced, fact-filled look at the underside of our production and consumption patterns.”
  • Per Espen Stokes on “How to transform apocalypse fatigue into action on global warming”
    • “The biggest obstacle to dealing with climate disruptions lies between your ears, says psychologist and economist Per Espen Stokes. He's spent years studying the defenses we use to avoid thinking about the demise of our planet -- and figuring out a new way of talking about global warming that keeps us from shutting down. Step away from the doomsday narratives and learn how to make caring for the earth feel personable, do-able and empowering with this fun, informative talk.”
  • Katharine Hayhoe on “The most important thing you can do to fight climate change: talk about it”
    • “How do you talk to someone who doesn't believe in climate change? Not by rehashing the same data and facts we've been discussing for years, says climate scientist Katharine Hayhoe. In this inspiring, pragmatic talk, Hayhoe shows how the key to having a real discussion is to connect over shared values like family, community and religion -- and to prompt people to realize that they already care about a changing climate. ‘We can't give in to despair,’ she says. ‘We have to go out and look for the hope we need to inspire us to act -- and that hope begins with a conversation, today.’"
