Spotlight on the Eucalyptus Grandis (Australian Bluegum)

Eucalyptus Grandis ( Australian Bluegum)

This months Alien Invasive Plant is the Eucalyptus Grandis ( Australian Bluegum), and is a NEMBA Category 1B AIP (Remove and destroy outside of managed commercial plantations). Much like the proverbial frog in the bucket of tepid water, the Bluegum’s proliferation has been quite subtle, and the extent of it’s slow but steady invasion could easily go unnoticed.

In it’s defense, the Bluegum is an attractive tree, and is appreciated by beekeepers for it’s abundant nectar.
However the Bluegum competes very successfully with, and replaces indigenous species. Apart from the space it occupies, it also releases chemicals which eliminate competitors.(Allelopathy)
Depending on the size, each tree uses between 100 and 1000 liters of water per day, which has a significant impact on ground water.
Apart from it’s Environmental impact, it is worth considering the cost of removing problem trees. This could vary from between R5000 and R35 000 per tree, depending on adjacent infrastructure. (Current market value of usable timber is about R500 per cubic meter).

Food for thought.

Till next time,

Barend Booysen.
