Women on Wheels is rolling again!!!

EXCITING NEWS! We’ve started the in-person workshops again.  We had our 1st one June 14 with a group of young women who just got their driving licenses. Smart young women who are learning some of the maintenance basics.  See them here learning about tire changes.

Register now for the next session on August 18.  You can register at info@wiseottawa.ca. see you at the workshop. Register now as numbers are limited.

Informative Workshop on Immigration & Family Law

What an enlightening workshop we had with two lawyers from the area Erin o’Rourke speaking on immigration issues and Concillia Muonde, a local family law lawyer who both addressed issues of what women would do if they were facing issues of violence. Erin highlighted some of the strategies that newcomers to Canada could access if they found themselves in the situation of a relationship breakdown and with threats of possible deportation. Concillia talked about the many stresses on women who may not be familiar with family law and the consequences and impacts if CAS is involved and what resources are out there.  It’s a matter of education and information access. Stay tuned as we may revisit these topics some time in the future.  These two women were fantastic presenters and we all learned so much. If you have some ideas about a workshop you’d like us to present, let us know at info@wiseottawa.ca

WISE Blog on Safety during Pride Season

Our newest board member, Hailey has submitted a blog on safety during Pride season. Here’s a snippet:

“This month kicks off Pride season here in Canada, which runs through the summer as various events take place across the country (our own Capital Pride will take place in August here in Ottawa). While Pride is an important opportunity to celebrate how far we’ve come, there is still much to be done to support our 2SLGBTQQIA+ community members.” … “2SLGBTQQIA+ people still experience higher rates of violence than their heterosexual, cisgender peers and often feel unsafe reporting incidents to the police due to fear of further violence and victimization. Yet their voices can be neglected within conversations about gender-based violence, despite so often being the target.
Compared to their heterosexual peers, LGB+ women are more likely to experience intimate partner violence (49% vs. 25%) and roughly half have been physically or sexually assaulted.”

Hailey makes some powerful arguments about reality in our city and shares some valuable resources. To find out more about this topic, check out the rest of the blog here

Inquest on Murdered Women Culleton, Kuzyk & Warmerdam

For the past number of weeks, we have been riveted by the testimony of family, friends, service providers and justice officials at the inquest into the murders of Carol Culleton, Anastasia Kuzyk and Nathalie Warmerdam of Wilno Ontario who were murdered by a extremely violent man in 2015. It was well known that this guy had a history of violence and access to weapons.  The inquest has completed its hearings and has presented its findings with 86 recommendations many of which we have seen before in former inquests such as May-Iles inquest of more than 20 years ago.  Gratifyingly, the top recommendation is for the issue of Intimate Partner Violence (IPV) to be named as an epidemic and treated with the urgency that that classification entails including providing stable and reliable funding for agencies dealing with women experiencing IPV.  We are also pleased to see that one of the recommendations includes the urging that early education occur so as to teach about violence prevention, about healthy and abusive relationships, identifying subtle indicators of coercive control, learning about risk factors, etc. This is the type of information we start to share with the youth who take our Heroes for tomorrow program.  We are starting early to shape positive attitudes and address issues of toxicity.  This work is vital!
Hopefullly, the Ontario government will implement these recommendations to help stem this violence epidemic.  The inquest parties will reconvene in 1 year to examine what’s been done.  Top read all of the inquest recommendations, access the following link:
