ColorBrightonGreen - Where to Take Your Recyclables

ColorBrightonGreen has headed in a new direction and moved away from collection of recyclables at the Brighton Farmers' Market. We have updated our website to provide information on where you can take the recyclable items that you have been collecting.

2022 Eco Fair
Thank you to everyone that participated in and attended our 2022 Eco Fair! We hope to see you again next year!

Invasive Species

Be on the lookout for an invasive plant that has been seen in Brighton, including along road sides. We need to do all we can to mitigate the propagation of this invader. If you use a landscaping company, please tell them if seen, to irradicate this from the property and their clients' properties. It propagates both via the roots and seeds. Pulling does not eliminate it as if there is any root left it will regrow. If you do see it and need help, please feel free to reach out and we will take care of it. Send an email to info@colorbrightongreen.org (Attention: Ward). We can help ID it (or any plant, for that matter).

Best to use a shovel and gloves and get as much of the roots as possible. DO NOT compost. Put it in the weekly trash so it gets taken away. After removal, monitor the location for regrowth. It hides and blends in well and can be mistaken for common thistle (also an invasive however less so).

This plant is highly invasive, severely reduces pasture capacity and desirable forages, degrades wildlife habitat, and can hinder reforestation and landscape restoration efforts. Once a population gets established, it begins to quickly displace native vegetation, including desirable pollinator habitat, creating large stands with little biological diversity and low habitat value.

Upcoming Events & Actions

Color Your Community Green

Our municipalities are the small but mighty building blocks of our region and state, and also of regional and statewide climate action. These towns, villages, and cities possess a great deal of authority and autonomy in “home rule” New York, meaning that much of the climate progress needed in our region can only happen when municipalities take action. This is why the Climate Solutions Accelerator of the Genesee-Finger Lakes Region is mobilizing climate action across the nine-county Genesee-Finger Lakes Region through the Color Your Community Green (CYCG) initiative. Inspired by Accelerator member organization Color Brighton Green, CYCG aims to connect and organize concerned individuals, by municipality or neighborhood, to form a network of climate-focused citizen action teams. CYCG efforts have launched and leapt forward throughout the Genesee-Finger Lakes Region. Subscribe to the Newsletter.

Sanctuary of the Wild

Sanctuary of the Wild offers a monthly opportunity on the last Sunday of each month, to gather on the land in community with others who yearn for sacred conversation with and deep listening to the natural world. We convene in a circle with senses wide open, then disperse, solo, onto the land for a period of time to enter into that sacred conversation with the more-than-human beings we encounter. Upon return, there is opportunity to share our experiences with one another.

When: Last Sunday of every month; 11:00 AM - 12:30 PM
Where: Join Facebook group to find out location each month
For More Info: Facebook Group Page

Seeds of Hope

Seeds of Hope is a monthly open gathering that inspires, equips, and empowers participants to live into the vision of an environmentally sustainable, spiritually fulfilling, and socially just human presence on our planet.

When: Sunday, September 11; 1:30 - 3:30 PM
Where: Online (Zoom)

Curbside Bin Recycling Info - When In Doubt, Throw It Out!

Avoid common mistakes like putting your recyclables in plastic bags (the bag and everything in the bag will go to the landfill instead of getting recycled) or putting any kind of styrofoam in curbside recycling. For more info, visit and read carefully their page on residential recycling.  Monroe County no longer recycles by number, they recycle plastic by shape now. When in doubt, throw it out! "Wishcycling" only contaminates the recyclable materials and can make the whole lot no longer recyclable.

Want to recycle your lids? Reattach them to their original container, otherwise they will be too small for the machines and will not be recycled.
