Welcome to June's Societal Engagement newsletter

This month saw the Great Exhibition Road Festival return to South Kensington as we celebrated all the trailblazing ideas, people and communities that are changing our world across science and the arts. A memorable weekend with over 38,000 participants, there were hands-on workshops, fascinating talks, and eye-catching exhibits for all members of the public to enjoy and experience.

We are also delighted to announce the winners of this year’s President's Awards for Excellence in Societal Engagement, including Dr Victoria Male who received the President's Medal for her work in informing the public about COVID-19 vaccine safety in pregnancy.

Great Exhibition Road Festival serves up trailblazing inspiration

Across Saturday 18 and Sunday 19 June, we welcomed over 38,000 participants to Exhibition Road as part of the Great Exhibition Road Festival. A free annual celebration of science and the arts, the Festival explored the trailblazing ideas, people and communities that are changing our world through a series of talks, exhibitions and workshops.

Imperial College London partnered with the Science Museum, Natural History Museum, V&A and Royal College of Music, as well as the Goethe-Institut, Royal College of Art, Royal Parks and the Royal Geographical Society to co-ordinate and deliver a unique programme of events. As in previous years, the full programme drew on the vast wealth of expertise from the College, museums and cultural institutions who collaborated to deliver it.

Olympian Sir Mo Farah even dropped by the Festival to encourage visitors to ‘exercise their mind.’

We would like to thank everyone who took part in the festival, from the wonderful volunteers to fantastic contributors, all of whom made the weekend a special and memorable event for both ourselves and the many attendees. Without your effort and dedication, the Festival would not be possible.

We now look ahead to 2023, as the Great Exhibition Road Festival is set to return on 17 - 18 June! Proposals for next year's Festival are expected to open this autumn, so keep an eye on our newsletter to find out when you can submit your ideas.

In the meantime, we will be continuing with our Great Exhibition Road Festival Explore at Home events, a series of talks and workshops surrounding science and the arts all delivered virtually. If you would like to get involved in these, please contact James Romero.

Winners of this year’s President’s Awards for Excellence in Societal Engagement announced

The President’s Awards for Excellence in Societal Engagement recognise and reward staff, students and community partners who have delivered excellence in schools engagement, community engagement, engagement with research and/or patient engagement.

Dr Victoria Male, Lecturer in Reproductive Immunology in the Department of Metabolism, Digestion and Reproduction, has been awarded the President’s Medal for Excellence in Societal Engagement for her work engaging with and helping to inform the public, particularly about COVID-19 vaccine safety in pregnancy.

Her work meant that thousands of women had access to accurate and understandable information to enable them to make an informed decision about COVID-19 vaccination. This was particularly important between April and December 2021, when clear national messaging from the Government and others was lacking.

Reflecting on winning the medal, Victoria said: “It means a lot to my whole family, really. I've spent a lot of evenings and weekends over the last 18 months engaging with people about COVID vaccination... chasing my kids out of the room so I could do webinars and interviews without them wandering into shot (although I didn't entirely avoid that!). It's nice to feel like all that work and time is valued.”

Congratulations to all of the winners of this year’s President’s Awards for Excellence in Societal Engagement.

Summer Science Exhibition 2023 call for proposals is open

Apply now to showcase your research at the Royal Society’s Summer Science Exhibition next summer.

The Royal Society is looking for researchers to take part in their flagship event celebrating the cutting-edge of UK science.

Taking place in July 2023, the Exhibition provides an excellent opportunity to engage a variety of audiences with your research, including members of the public, school groups, policy makers and potential funders and fellows of the Royal Society. Each year, they welcome thousands of visitors through their doors and reach many more through national coverage on TV or in the media.

It’s a great opportunity to raise the profile of UK research and gain valuable experience communicating with diverse audience groups. The Royal Society also helps applicants every step of the way, from guidance on submitting a proposal to preparing and coordinating an exhibit.

Find out how to apply or read the case studies from previous exhibitors to find out about their experiences first-hand. The deadline for proposals is 12 September 2022.
