Holiday Activity and Food (HAF) Programme

School holidays can be particularly difficult for some families because of increased costs (including food and childcare) and/or reduced incomes.
With funding received from the Department of Education, B&NES LA has commissioned a Summer HAF programme.

Details of the extensive, varied HAF Summer Programme operating in many locations across B&NES can be found here:
https://we-activate.co.uk/activate-your-holiday/

(An electronic brochure and flyer can also be downloaded from the website).

Parent/carers of all eligible children and young people should have received an email containing a unique ‘HAF Pass’ link which allows them to directly book onto 10 sessions.

A proportion of the HAF places are available for children and young people who are not eligible for Free School Meals but who are considered vulnerable by the LA and who would benefit from attending e.g. children assessed as being in need, Looked After Children, children with EHCPs, children from Ukraine, children with low attendance rates at school or who are at risk of exclusion, children electively home educated, children from low-income households who are not in receipt of free school meals.  Parent/carers of these children can contact the provider of the activity they would like their child to attend and the provider will request a ‘HAF Pass’ for the child and, providing the request is agreed, will book a place for that child.

The HAF clubs provide a great opportunity for 4-16 year olds to enjoy the company of others in a safe, active and friendly environment as well as receiving a nutritious meal, all at no charge to the parent/carers.

Please help market this provision as appropriate. (To ensure money is not wasted, all children and young people must attend their booked provision).

DRINK THINK TOOL

Drink Think is an alcohol brief intervention with health messages relevant for young people. The tool kit includes a screening tool to ascertain if a young person is at risk from their alcohol use, brief advice, a harm reduction information sheet and guide for professionals. The intervention can be delivered in 30 minutes, dependent on the time professionals and young people have available and the level of risk.
Designed by young people!

Clean Air Project in Temple Cloud and Farrington Gurney

Temple Cloud and Farrington Gurney are 2 villages that exceeded the national air quality objectives for Nitrogen Dioxide (NO2) in the last Annual Status Report, and as a result they were declared B&NES air quality management areas.
To support the Council’s work in Temple Cloud and Farrington Gurney the Public Health team have been working with both communities in the following ways:
  • Provision of advice and information to residents.
  • Targeted information campaign for the most vulnerable, which includes children, pregnant women, residents with respiratory existing cardiovascular or respiratory disease, and older people.
The Public Health team have cascaded information on how to promote clean air and how to protect themselves from poor air quality to general practices, pharmacies, care homes, local businesses, and village agents to share with residents. Public Health staff have also joined the Council’s Mobile Library team to talk directly with residents.

Two local primary schools participated in Clean Air Day lesson activities, travel surveys as part of Walk to School Week, and have been using anti-idling banners to remind parents to turn their engines off outside the school gates.

The children have also been getting creative through making posters that highlight what causes air pollution and the actions we can all take to improve air quality and our health. These poster trails can now be found around Temple Cloud and Farrington Gurney and will be in situ for 6 weeks. Take the challenge, ditch the car, and see if you can find them!

We will also be delivering information leaflets to residents in the most effected areas in both villages in August.

For more information about clean air including forecasts and what you can do to protect yourselves, please visit the Clean Air Hub.

The 2022 air quality annual status report is in its sign-off stage and will be available soon.
