Homes for Ukraine appeal

More sponsors are needed for the Homes for Ukraine scheme.

Please share this link https://www.gov.uk/register-interest-homes-ukraine with any groups or individuals you know who may be in a position to offer space in their homes to people who have fled Ukraine.

As the war in Ukraine continues, more refugee families are arriving here needing emergency accommodation.

While there were many expressions of interest to become sponsors at the start of the conflict, many of those subsequently proved to be unsuitable as accommodation providers. In addition, many existing sponsors are unable to extend their current accommodation offer beyond six months.

For all these reasons, Cornwall Council is asking for your support now in highlighting the Homes for Ukraine scheme to your communities.

Cornwall Council is continuing to work with government and other agencies to match families to sponsors after carrying out safeguarding and suitability checks.

The Council is also managing transfer placements for families who have come to the end of their current placement and need new sponsored accommodation.

Please email homesforukraine@cornwall.gov.uk with any questions about the scheme, including requests for accommodation re-matches, so Cornwall Council can ensure the safety of both families and sponsors.

There’s more information about the scheme on the Homes for Ukraine page on Cornwall Council’s website.

and more.

Cornwall's top scams revealed

Please share this information with people in your area.

Households across Cornwall are being duped by fraudsters using four main tactics, Cornwall Council’s Trading Standards has revealed.

Recent scams reported to Trading Standards include:

  • Home insulation and removal – Complaints about companies offering spray foam or loft insulation have increased by around 40% compared with last year. Customers are often charged far more than the normal value of the work. The same customers are then targeted weeks later by another company claiming the insulation has caused terrible damage. The second company offers to remove it for a similar cost.
  • Bogus car sales – Online car sales have increased since the pandemic. Now people often buy vehicles unseen and with the promise of delivery to their door. Unfortunately, Trading Standards receives regular reports of people handing over a deposit or full amount and vehicles not arriving. Or sometimes they arrive in a worse condition than advertised. Scammers may use a business name that resembles that of another legitimate trader. They may also give a real, but unconnected contact address – usually in a remote part of the UK.
  • Fake deliveries – A person receives a text or email, claiming that a parcel has been unable to be delivered. The message will often provide a link to follow in order to re-book the delivery. At this stage the scammer may try to take a payment for further delivery or ask for personal details.
  • Accommodation letting scams – Properties are advertised using photographs taken from historical listings websites. Prospective tenants pay a deposit. Then they find out the advertisement and landlord are false, and the property is already occupied. Similar scams have affected holiday accommodation in the same way.

Anyone can fall victim to a scam, no matter what their age or financial status.

If you think you may have been a victim of a scam and would like advice, or are concerned about a friend, neighbour or family member, visit www.cornwall.gov.uk/TradingStandards. Or call the Citizens Advice Consumer Helpline on 0808 223 1133.

Warning over new COVID wave

Please share this information with people in your area.

With COVID cases on the rise, people in Cornwall are again being urged to do all they can to protect themselves and others from the virus.

Local data and the Office for National Statistics (ONS) survey show the number of positive cases is rising swiftly. Currently 2.7% of the population in Cornwall are thought to have the virus.

It comes as thousands of people prepare to make the trip down to Cornwall for holidays and festivals.

Residents and visitors alike are being asked to make sure they and their families are fully vaccinated against COVID. Vaccines are still available for anyone from the age of five years and up who has not yet taken up the offer. If you’re eligible for a spring booster, please do try to book this month to ensure there is a six month gap between doses if you have an autumn booster.

People should also remember the basics to keep the virus at bay – wash or sanitise hands regularly, try to meet outdoors if possible, keep indoor spaces well ventilated, wear a mask if you can in busy indoor settings, and don’t mix with people if you’re feeling unwell.

See the Information about Coronavirus page on Cornwall Council’s website for support for residents, including living safely with COVID-19, testing and vaccinations, self-isolation, local COVID-19 data, mental health support, and more.
