Resting in the Lord

I don't know about you, but this summer has been a busy one! Between launching Totus Tuus and the Summer Scripture Institute, taking my kids to Notre Dame Vision and a week-long day camp, and just normal ministry and family responsibilities, I feel like I've put more miles on my vehicle in June than I did in all of 2020!

And yet I'm keenly aware if I allow the "doing" to take over that I'll miss out on the essential component of "being" -- that is, our role as catechist in the Church isn't just a matter of what we do, but who we are. The identity of the catechist is one of disciple, forgiven sinner, and beloved child of the Father. We are reminded of this identity whenever the Scriptures are proclaimed or we reflect on the prayers of the liturgy. Before we ever pass on the faith we experience this identity ourselves; it is thus that we become not just teachers of a set of doctrines but witnesses to a living faith.

I pray that you will find a day or two this summer to refresh your own identity as a catechist and leader in the Church by finding some quiet time to spend with the Lord through the Sacred Scriptures, in God's creation, or in adoration of the Blessed Sacrament. Doing so will not only give you the strength to engage in the "doing" of ministry, but will enhance it as you deepen your encounter with Jesus.

Rescheduled: Mystagogical Reflection For the Parish & RCIA

Our mystagogy workshop (which was canceled in February due to inclement weather) has been rescheduled for Friday, September 9, at Holy Spirit at Geist (Fishers) and Saturday, September 10, at St. Joan of Arc (Kokomo). Dr. Steve Janko will provide an overview on the RCIA period of mystagogy, how to facilitate mystagogical reflection for various parish ministries, and resources for facilitators of mystagogical reflection.

Each pastorate is asked to send two staff or volunteers to attend, learn, and share the information with other parish leaders of the pastorate. This session will benefit priests, deacons, directors of evangelization, DREs, catechists, RCIA coordinators, youth ministers, and liturgy/music coordinators.

Mercy Tree Adventures

Mercy Tree Adventures is a traveling ministry formed to evangelize men, their families, and communities via adventurous encounters with God’s Word. Events, which can be hosted locally, are filled with tree climbing, entry level Scripture study, fellowship, and prayer. The goal is for participants to create community with one another, to stretch themselves in a new task, to hear Scripture in a new way and then to open themselves to the person of Jesus in and through healing and prophetic prayer.

The ministry was created by Carlos and Elena Tejeda. Together they have 30 years of professional and volunteer experience in parish and diocesan ministries including family life, marriage preparation, marriage enrichment, Natural Family Planning, RCIA, and small prayer groups. For more information, go to MercyTreeAdventures.org.

The Church: Becoming What We Are

"We live in a time of heightened divisiveness and loneliness. Online social connections are, as we all know, meager substitutes for real connection and friendship. Perhaps you share with me the conviction that the Church is the needed antidote."
