Citizen science through schools: the importance of interpersonal relationships

A new paper has just been published entitled, Citizen science through schools: the importance of interpersonal relationships. The authors specifically targeted communities with low science awareness and demonstrated the importance of interpersonal relationships not only to the students’ outcomes but also to the efficacy of the citizen science project. [Content in English, abstract in English, Portuguese, and Spanish]

Citizens scientists identify 181 genome regions of scientific interest in cancer through Genigma

The #GenigmaChallenge is the first participative experiment to analyse the human genome through a mobile phone app, GENIGMA. Led by a scientific team from CNAG-CRG in Barcelona, the experiment lasted 20 weeks. Genigma was downloaded by more than 40.000 people from 154 countries and obtained 600,287 solutions. 181 “Eureka regions'', areas of the genome of interest in breast cancer research, have been identified.

Science scepticism and how to reduce it

What can we do about science scepticism? Several Austrian experts discussed during an online event how to strengthen understanding of science and counteract science scepticism. A short summary and the event recording (in German) are available now in this link.

OIS Research Conference

This year!s OIS Research Conference took place at – and in cooperation with – the CERN IdeaSquare in Geneva, Switzerland. The conference stands out by bringing together scholars from across disciplines interested in discussing processes, effects and boundary conditions of openness and collaboration in science. As a unique feature of the annual conference, participants can experiment with novel approaches to their own research: at this year's conference, the participants explored how the use of Artificial Intelligence (AI) influences the development of new research ideas and, building on that, explored how AI affects openness and collaboration in scientific research.

Marine Ranger

Marine Ranger is a citizen science application enabling collection of information on opportunistic observations of live, injured or by-caught cetaceans (whales and dolphins) and other marine mammals. The reports and observations will help us identify threats and areas of interactions with dolphins, whales and seals and act swiftly in case of emergency. With citizens' support, we aim to ensure a better future for all marine mammals!

Designing a chatbot to enhance sustained engagement of newcomers in citizen science

This master thesis carried out at the University of Gothenburg presents a chatbot prototype for sustaining newcomer engagement in the Koster Seafloor Observation (KSO), an open-source approach to analyze large amounts of subsea movie data for marine ecological research in Sweden. Testing results suggest that a CS chatbot application can engage CS newcomers in four ways (1) reducing information overload, (2) providing a responsive learning process, (3) guiding them on how to use the platform, and (4) establishing a rapport. At the same time, the study suggests design guidelines to develop chatbots for CS projects which share similar characteristics to KSO. The full text of the thesis can be requested to Phong Trang, phong.trangtran94@gmail.com

Public & Patient Involvement and Engagement projects in portrait

How can patients and their family members be actively involved in research and what impact does this have not only on research but also on society? The PPIE projects – accompanied by the OIS Center with its expertise in open and collaborative practices in research – already have some answers to these questions and are now presenting them in short videos: here you find all our support services.

ECSA project updates

Cos4Cloud

The webinar “Cos4Cloud and its services for the citizen science community”, co-organised with the Cos4Cloud project took place on 23rd June. In case you missed it or if you would like to re-watch it, you can find it on our YouTube channel.

Cos4Cloud project partner Henning Bredel gives some insight into the agile methodology used in the project to improve the citizen science services the project is developing in this interview. You can also read about innovation in citizen science and about Sasha Woods’ expertise in it in this post on the Cos4Cloud website. In other news, the services MOBIS and FASTCAT-Cloud as well as the integration between the latter and the citizen observatory iSpot were presented in a webinar on 23rd June. Check out the recording if you would like to learn more about them.

SOCIO-BEE and COMPAIR

Carolina Doran, Beatriz Noriega and Pavel Kogut attendend the Living Knowledge Conference LK9 and presented a dilemma, where all participants were encouraged to share ideas around the topic of inclusion in Citizen Science.

Help us improve weather forecasting with the CAMALIOT mobile app

With the help of citizen scientists from around the world, we have now collected around 80 billion measurements of satellite navigation data to help improve weather forecasting. It's not too late to participate! Download the app from https://www.camaliot.org.

Digital Action and Citizen Science for All with the HEIDI Project

The HEIDI Project (Digital action at HEIs as a catalyst for social change in the COVID-19 crisis) has been running an exciting series of events by its partners (UCL ExCiteS, Web2Learn, Citizens in Power, Universite de Paris, University of Malta). These have included roundtables, workshops and webinars with HEI staff and students and with community groups, with the aim of HEIs and community groups learning about digital action from each other and the upskilling of both. UCL ExCiteS ran a series of "Citizen Science For All Talks" and "Citizen Science Training", both of which will be uploaded to ExCiteS' YouTube channel over the week beginning 27th June.
