Your Weekly Dose of Uptown Love!

The day has arrived folks. Let us all gather TODAY, Thursday, June 30 at 6 pm at the venerable United Palace to celebrate the closing of the 20th Uptown Arts Stroll. And what an Uptown Arts Stroll it has been. The event is 100% FREE and open to all. No RSVP needed!

You can expect an Artist Talk by Andrea Arroyo on her three-venue exhibition Art as Solidarity as well as a Flamenco performance by Maria de los Angeles. Last but least there will be a reception for Creating Home: Immigrant Perspectives, the inaugural exhibition in NoMAA’s new gallery on the first floor of the United Palace annex. See you there familia.

This past Sunday, Uptown superhero Lin-Manuel Miranda brought the one and only Steven Spielberg to the United Palace for a little convo after the screening of the classic film, Raiders of the Lost Art. The remaining movies in the series are: Black Panther, screening on September 18, and Coco scheduled for October 16. We will let you know when those FREE tickets become available.

Sheer insanity… This is not about abortion, this is about the controlling of women’s bodies by the state. This will not stop with women. This is the Handmaid’s Tale in real life. This CANNOT stand. Thanks once again to artist extraordinaire Andrea Arroyo for creating art that speaks to the existential dread that many of us feel.

The world has changed. Jia Tolentino of The New Yorker posits that, “we are entering an era not just of unsafe abortions but of the widespread criminalization of pregnancy.” As frightening as that sounds that is exactly what is happening across this country. Click below for a bracing read.
