On 4 April 2022, the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC) released a report on Mitigation of Climate Change – the contribution of the Working Group III (WGIII) to the Sixth Assessment Report (AR6). The report concludes that humanity has the means and technologies to accelerate climate action but that we must act now.
According to the evidence, clean electricity and agriculture/forestry/land use are the main sectors that can enable us to accelerate emission reductions. Acknowledging that these sectors have potential impact on Indigenous Peoples’ lands, territories, and resources, this briefing paper analyses the IPCC report’s findings with regard to the recognition of Indigenous Peoples’ rights, their situations and their role in the mitigation of climate change.
