‘Say no cyber nasties’ campaign

Keep an eye-out for our new ‘Say No to Cyber Nasties’ campaign coming out in the post this week. The light-hearted campaign features some fuzzy, endearing but inherently mean little critters who love nothing more than causing cyber disruption to schools. The focus of the campaign is to encourage schools to look at the IT security practices at their school, and take some simple steps to help keep cyber threats out.

Online advice hub

We know how hard it is to get easy-to-access advice on managing your IT, and it’s just as hard to know where to start. We’ve updated the Digital Technology section on our website to pull the Ministry’s advice into one place. It includes new advice on keeping backups, IT risk management, and regular software updates. Check it out here.

Cyclone is the new Microsoft software licensing partner

The Ministry ran a procurement process to select a software licensing partner, through a request for proposal (RFP) process and a preferred supplier has been selected: Cyclone Computer Company Ltd.
The new agreement with Cyclone will commence from Friday 1 July 2022 and all Microsoft licensing enquiries should be directed to Cyclone from this time. Please advise your school’s IT administrator of the new contact details.

Email:          nzschools@cyclone.co.nz
Tollfree:       0800 225542; option 1 (for Microsoft school’s agreement – the same as before.)

We’d like to talk to you!

The Cyber Security in Schools and Digital planning teams are eager to understand more about how you manage your digital technology and IT set-ups.

We’d like to meet a range of schools, kura, and Kāhui Ako to learn more about how schools make IT decisions, and the challenges and pain points you face. The feedback we receive will be used to inform how we can best provide support schools with cyber security protection.

Alternatively if you have something you’d like to hear from us or get some advice on, we’re happy to talk about that too. If you’d like to be involved, please contact us at:

Harmful online content circulating

Netsafe is aware that there is an increased amount of video content that is circulating online that could cause significant emotional harm to those that view it, whether it has been sought out, or viewed accidentally.

If young people are exposed to upsetting content it can hard to know how to help. Netsafe has developed advice for young people and their families to guide you through this difficult situation.

Netsafe’s advice for young people: www.netsafe.org.nz/what-do-do-if-something-upsets-you/
Netsafe’s advice for families: www.netsafe.org.nz/upsetting-content/

And as always, if you are concerned about content that you or someone you know has seen online, you can report it to Netsafe at netsafe.org.nz/report, or contact us on 0508 NETSAFE to talk with one of our specialist online safety team.
