Have You Seen the Green Flash?
At our breakfast last Wednesday, former Tin Can sailor Carl Rectenwald talked about seeing the "green flash" at sunset while serving aboard the USS Myles C. Fox in the 1960s. Other Navy vets said they've also seen it. I'd never heard of such a thing. Astronomer Andrew T. Young is the leading expert on the green flash (and the rarer blue flash), and he has a website devoted to it.

Scuttlebutt Movie Reviews
The Scuttlebutt goes to the movies this week with Shaun, Kathryn, Ryan, and Evan. They break down THE 15:17 TO PARIS, a 2018 film directed by Clint Eastwood and starring the real-life veterans who foiled a terrorist attack in France. Planning for Yesterday
After the defeat of Napoleon at Waterloo in 1815, the Swedish Royal Navy planted a 900-acre forest of oaks for future shipbuilding. By the time the trees reached maturity, the age of sail was over. Today, the trees still stand, unharvested, unusually straight and aligned, on Visingso island. Atlas Obscura has a short article on the island. Is there a lesson here about strategic vision?

Hershel "Woody" Williams, 1923-2022
Everyone has heard by now that Hershel “Woody” Williams, the last remaining Medal of Honor recipient from World War II, died last week at age 98. We were honored to have him on our Greatest Generation Live program a year ago. You can watch him tell his story and talk with fellow Iwo Jima Marine veterans Larry Kirby and Jack Watson at the link below.
