Monday 4th July 2022

Kia ora Bradford Whānau,

As this goes to print, as they say, we are very much crossing our fingers and toes that we can hang in there for the Production this Thursday evening. There was nearly a third of our school off ill on Friday.  Over the weekend, Miss McKillop and Miss Little also both succumbed to the vomiting bug and so we have two kaiako and eleven tamariki (not all Covid) away today.

We have of course considered postponing, but are unfortunately committed to paying for all the production costs at this stage if we cancel with short notice. To further complicate matters, you may have heard on the news that the second wave of Omicron is hitting much quicker than expected. They are expecting between 20 - 25 000 cases per day not too far away which may force a return to red traffic light.  With this uncertainty, we start to see venues reluctant to take on new bookings so we are going to do our very best to proceed as planned.

I will let you know by email, Seesaw and Facebook if we end up being forced to postpone.

Important details for Thursday night are:

All children are to be delivered dressed in their costumes to the University of Otago Teachers College Auditorium - photographs are below of the building you are looking for.

There are different times for different characters.  Please do not drop your child off early.

5:45pm:  Drop off for ALL CHARACTERS (except those listed below)

5:30pm: Drop off for only the following:
Pearl Periwinkle - Maisie
Jack Periwinkle - Ajax
Liza Periwinkle - Charlotte
Captain Cod - Benji
Captain Redbeard - Lilyanna
Scuttle - Saanvi
Slack - Maddie
Admiral Hornhonker - Nico

The show starts at 6pm - entry is strictly by pre-sold ticket only.  There are still tickets available if you require more - these can be purchased up to 3pm on Thursday.

We are very much looking forward to seeing you all there.

The University of Otago College of Education address is 145 Union Street East.
The main reception building is pictured on the left about halfway down the street.  You are wanting the Auditorium directly beside the main office - the one with the angled roof.
The building you want has the pitched roof and the words Auditorium above the door.  This is the Public entry at 6pm.   Children will come down the driveway to the right of that building (next photo).
This sign frames the driveway that the children walk down.  The Auditorium building is on their left and this childcare sign on the right. They have used this entry for practices.
There are doors at the end of the driveway that the children will enter when dropped off.  The audience comes in the front auditorium door not this one.  The doors for the Public will open at approximately 5:50pm for you to find a seat - you will need your ticket to get in.
EXCITING NEWS ...
It was a very moving day back in 2014 when Alex Whittaker, (a Kāi Tahu expert carver from Puketeraki Marae) blessed the Tanemahuta pou he had carved especially for us as guardian of our Bradford kura.  Sadly, Tane developed an internal fungal growth from his damp feet and needed to be removed earlier this year by Alex.

We spoke about how important Tanemahuta is to Bradford and how we might alleviate a repeat of this sad event when the wonderful PTA commissioned Alex to carve a replacement pou.

Alex suggested a contemporary corten-steel pou would be better suited to the environment and so it was agreed.   Tane is ready and coming back on the first Monday back of Term 3!!!

All whānau who would like to be present at the unveiling at approximately 1pm on Monday 25th July are warmly invited to attend.
It was fabulous to have one of our favourite presenters El Gregoe return to Bradford this week.  He was scheduled for Term 1 but had to postpone due to Covid. His messages of treating others as we wish to be treated align perfectly with the values we promote at school.  The tamariki are always floored by his magic tricks involving the sudden appearance (and just as quick disappearance) of his lovely live birds.  Levi Hewlett was tickled pink to be called up to the stage as El Gregoe's assistant.

Thank you to the whānau who were able to make the scheduled Year 4-6 Student-led Learning Conferences last week.  These are a very important component of our shared partnership to support your child's learning.

We really do need to see you in person please this time as the children have prepared their learning to share with you.  The teachers also need to explain the new format mid-year update on your child's progress against curriculum expectations.

If you missed an interview time, please contact your child's teacher to reschedule for early next term

Children in Years 1-3 have learning conferences as anniversary dates of their weeks at school fall due.

TICKET SALES REMAIN OPEN UNTIL THURSDAY MORNING
  • ADULTS $6  &  CHILDREN $4  (toddlers on knees still have to be counted for in the H & S building maximum occupancy hirer conditions sorry)

School swimming starts weekly on Wednesdays next term.  Please double-check before then that your child's togs still fit and purchase some good-fitting goggles if you feel like this would aid them in the pool.  We always appreciate any extra offers of supervisory help - if you can assist then please let your child's teacher know as soon as possible.
Snow Day Procedures for all primary and intermediate schools, and DKA Dunedin Kindergartens between Mosgiel to Port Chalmers to Waikouaiti

There is a group of principals who liaise with local Police, Dunedin Taxi companies, and also look at the DCC webcams to check on the weather around the city if there is snow forecast or settling.  This group then decides if a widespread closure or late start will be needed to get tamarki and staff safely to school.

This announcement is made on the radio stations of Classic Hits and Breeze (Media Works).

However, Principals can also make an individual decision for their school, particularly if they can’t safely get staff to school from their homes on the hill suburbs. You will receive an email via the Office email and Seesaw as soon as a decision is made if this is the case for us.   If in doubt please check emails and Seesaw before sending your child to school.

SEPTEMBER SCHOOL BOARD ELECTIONS
Bradford's Board of Trustees is looking for whānau of our tamariki who are interested in being a part of our School Board.

This is a great way to be involved in the running of the school and have a greater understanding of the work that goes on behind the white board.

So if you feel you would like to be involved or would like to find out more information please contact the Board Chair;

Bradford School's Enrolment Zone officially ceased at the end of last year.  What this means is that we can return to accepting student's from beyond the Bradford boundary that may like to join our special place. In the past, it has been really heartbreaking having to turn away prospective families who were not in Zone.

If you know of families who are interested in attending Bradford School we encourage you to please let them know we are now accepting students across all year levels for 2022.  Equally if you have a younger child who you are intending to enrol, we ask that you please let Sonja know so we can put them on our list.  This forward planning assists greatly in our staffing and classroom configurations to ensure we deliver the best adult to student ratios we can for our tamariki.
