Dear KTC Community Members,

The lazy hazy days of summer are finally upon us, bringing as always, a ramp-up in our junior programs, as well as some of our most popular KTC tournaments. The regular KTC summer camp kicks off this coming week, followed by the brand-new Next Level Camp for up-and-coming juniors offered off-site starting July 11th, then the Ladies’ and Men’s Doubles Championship gets underway on Thursday, July 14th.

And not to be missed – drum roll please – the grand opening of our newly restored clubhouse just days away on Saturday, July 9th. Yes, it’s finally happening! Construction is wrapping up this week and we’ll have access to the clubhouse in a matter of days (no more porta-potties, thank goodness!). So come and celebrate with us next Saturday with food, live music, DJ and dancing on our spiffed-up court seven dance floor. And we’ll throw in a bonus as well. If you reserve your tickets to the
Tennis Ball by end of day Monday, your name(s) will go into a draw for a $200 Racquet Science gift certificate!! More details on the Tennis Ball party are included in the flyer below.

Mixed Doubles Wrap-Up

The 2022 KTC Mixed Doubles Championship was a great success with 27 teams - 54 participants – taking to the courts and putting on a great show for the many spectators who attended. It was fun and exciting tennis for spectators and players alike, with plenty of memorable three-set matches.

In a slightly new format, matches took place on both Thursday and Friday evenings, which lightened the playing load for Saturday and Sunday. Older players (and probably some younger ones too) breathed a sigh of relief that they didn’t have to endure hours and hours of match play on either Saturday or Sunday.

In a rematch of last year's final, Julia Nomikos & Arsalan Ijaz, prevailed once again in a 6-2, 6-3 win against their formidable opponents from a year ago, Paige Ready & John Berkok. Congratulations as well to semi-finalist pairings David Corrigan & Maria Constandinou and Renee Austin & Bud Nelson, who played high quality tennis all weekend long.

Please join us in congratulating the B, C & D Pool winners and finalists on a successful tournament!

B Pool
Winners: Lesley Furter & Nick Dempsey
Finalists: Claire Tremblay & Arjun Devnani

C Pool
Finalists: Amy Fisher & Tim Blackwell vs. Viki Andrevska & Scott McNeely
Winners TBD

D Pool
Winners: Dalhsie McMullin & Phil Casey
Finalists: Dora & Paul Nomikos

Special thanks to tournament director Arjun Devnani and event coordinator Asia
Zolnierczyk, as well as the many other volunteers who helped to make the event such a success. We want to especially acknowledge Luke Webb, Yoon Kang and Yash Patel for all of their help over the weekend, and Arsalan Ijaz for his assistance with constructing the draw.

July 14th - 17th

First round play starts 5:30 pm on Thursday, July 14th, with matches continuing until approximately 9:30 pm. Play continues through Friday evening, all day Saturday followed by the tournament wrap-up on Sunday with the semi-finals in the morning, and the men’s and women’s championship finals in the afternoon.

As always, the timing of matches is subject to change if the weather doesn't cooperate. We will do our best to accommodate everyone: if matches are delayed, stewards and tournament organizers will keep members up to date about revised match times.

This event is open exclusively to current KTC members. The entry fee for the tournament is $20 per person, with players guaranteed at least 3 matches.
Now that the good weather is here, we're going to return to our pre-covid tradition of hosting a BBQ dinner on Saturday evening at 5:30 pm. We'll be offering chicken, beef or veggie burgers, so when you register please indicate which option you prefer. There will also be complimentary refreshments, and prize medals for the winners and finalists

Registration closes Monday, July 11th at 9:00 pm so sign up now!!

To register now and pay your $20 per-person entry fee, please follow this link or simply contact a KTC steward at ktc@kingstontennisclub.com, with the names of the players, your food choices and play restrictions, if any, for Thursday and Friday nights. If you need a partner, just let a steward know as soon as you can, before the tournament registration deadline. To volunteer over the tournament weekend, please email Asia or Arjun.

Staffing News

We are pleased to welcome Lucas Nault and Waverley Mulligan as the newest members of our steward staff, replacing Rishi and Pilar, who will transition to camp staff beginning July 4th. Luke has already begun training Lucas and Waverley and they will no doubt be kept very busy as we begin moving in to the new clubhouse & kiosk.
Hi everyone, my name is Lucas Nault. I'm excited to start working as a steward this year. I am going into grade 11 at Kingston Secondary School in the fall. I have attended multiple camps at Kingston Tennis Club. I enjoy playing sports such as soccer and basketball in my spare time. Looking forward to meeting you all!

Hello everyone! I'm Waverley Mulligan and during the school year I am a Master's student studying at Dalhousie University. This summer I am here in Kingston writing my thesis and working at the tennis club. I also enjoy playing tennis with my family, ultimate frisbee and running. I am very excited to be part of the KTC Team :)

Junior Tennis Ladder

In addition to the structured junior tennis programs described above, we also provide our juniors the opportunity to put their new skills into practice by participating in the Junior Tennis Ladder.

Our junior ladder provides an easy way to arrange games. It is open to players of all skill levels, from beginner to advanced. Those at the top of the ladder tend to be competitive players, while those towards the bottom are often new to the game and simply looking for practice and experience. You can start contacting other players to arrange matches as soon as you sign up. The ladder operates through the TennisRungs application: refer to the guidelines for detailed instructions on how to sign up, or simply contact a KTC steward in person, or at ktc@kingstontennisclub.com.

Format: To accommodate the one-hour time limit for each regular ladder match, the standard junior match format is one set to 6, with a tiebreaker at 5-5. If both players agree and time permits, any match format may be played (e.g., Pro set to 8, best of 3 sets, win by 2 games, etc. etc.). Just remember that all matches must be completed on the same day - no carry-overs!
The city’s off-again on-again collection of our garbage and recycling is regrettably off once more.

While we work to get the service resumed, we must ask everyone using the club to take home with them any garbage or recyclables they bring to the courts. (And definitely don't bring trash to the club as was spotted recently!)

Board Matters

Although November seems a long way off, it’s not too early to think about our club’s AGM, which is normally held that month. In order to give the Nominating committee more time to find candidates to run for any open positions, the Board plans to appoint the Nominating committee members this month.

In keeping with our by-laws, the Nominating committee has recently been composed of two Board members and two club members not on the Board. If you wish to serve on this committee, or would like more information about what’s involved, please get in touch with a Governance committee member: Bob Goddard
or Gary Wilson.

Note that there will be a few open positions for the board elected in 2022 as not all members plan to seek another term.
