Here we are in July, halfway through the year already! It feels like after a slower start to the year, things have really started to pick up — I don't know about you, but my diary has started to look much fuller lately! Some highlights for me last month were attending Environment Network Manawatū's 21st Birthday Celebrations and the Launch of the 4412 Kai Resilience Strategy, the Manawatū Multicultural Council's Leadership Dinner, and Volunteer Central's Volunteer Recognition Event. These were a great opportunity to hear, see, and celebrate what's happening in different groups right across our community. Well done to each organisation on your fantastic events!
Here at CSC, Justin has been working hard on a range of trainings for the sector, so I encourage you to make the most of the opportunities below. I've also been enjoying our Managers' Forums, which have been a great place to discuss some of the challenges and share knowledge and solutions. If you haven't come along yet, I encourage you to do so. Managers' Forums are the last Wednesday of every month at 2pm at Hancock Community House.
The Community Development Small Grants Committee have now met and we just have to do some final calculations, so you will hear the results from this in the coming weeks if you made an application.
As always, please reach out to our team if CSC can assist your organisation in any way.
Noho ora mai,
Tim

Kia ora koutou,
As we head into July, formal Council meetings take a break for the month, but your city councillors are still active in the community and my own diary looks as busy as ever!
The annual budget was finalised at the end of June, and the rates increase is 5.8%, significantly less than the draft at 8.3%. There are changes to how we calculate rates too, which will iron out some of the large increases residential ratepayers were facing due to revaluations. Many thanks to everyone who took the time to provide a submission.
The new lookout at the site of Turitea Pā on He Ara Kotahi, the pathway along the river to Linton, opened this month. It is absolutely stunning with views up and down the river and was designed and constructed in partnership with Rangitāne. Well worth a trip on foot or by bike.
If you know anyone who is new to Palmy over the last year or so, please invite them to first city welcoming event in a while, Saturday 16th July at 10.30am at Te Manawa. More details here: Welcome to Palmy | Palmerston North City Council (pncc.govt.nz)
It is election year for local government and nominations for candidates open on 15th July. Now is a good time to check you are enrolled to vote too. The voting period is from 15th September to 12pm on 8th October.
Ngā mihi nui,

Kia orana
Last week marked the beginning of a new nationwide public health system that will ensure better outcomes for all New Zealanders.
The establishment on 1 July, of Te Whatu Ora – Health New Zealand, and Te Aka Whai Ora – the Māori Health Authority, will improve access to healthcare for all New Zealanders, no matter who they are, their ethnicity or gender, or whether they’re urban or rural. It’s about making it easier to get care early so small issues don’t become big problems requiring hospitalisation.
With these entities and their boards replacing the 20 district health boards around the country, this is just the start of our plans to ensure kiwis have a health system we can be proud of now, and in the future.
I know this will be welcome news to many who work tirelessly in our health sector – you and your work are valued; thanks for all you have done and will continue to do.
Kia manuia

Changes to the Incorporated Societies Act

The new Incorporated Societies Act 2022 replaces the Incorporated Societies Act 1908. This was enacted in April following a review and consultation process that lasted twelve years. Every incorporated society in New Zealand will need to review its constitution to ensure it meets the new requirements, as well as actively reregister as part of transitioning to the new regime (if they wish to continue to access the benefits of incorporation). This workshop will cover what incorporated societies need to do before, during, and after the transition.

Palmerston North Street Van Update
Winter is here, with cold weather people who need food and someone to talk to go out early and congregate at The Square. Our volunteers have decided to out early too. For our 27 years of being in The Square on Saturday nights, we have seen new people coming into the city, some are newly released from prison who need accommodation, some are from another city trying to settle in, and some are young people trying to find more food to fill their tummies. With prices of commodities going up families are struggling to put food on their table. We have some regular who asked for extra food that they can take home. Going out on Saturday night really expose you to reality of life, that poverty is real.
