FREEDOM

For freedom Christ has set you free, stand firm, therefore, and do not submit again to a yoke of slavery.  - Galatians 5:1

Freedom comes with responsibility, and sometimes feelings like joy, relief, guilt and anxiety.  In our walk with Christ, we are free to live under the greatest command: To love another as Christ loved us.  What responsibility!  So many choices of how to live into this call of freedom and service.

Recently I was asked this question:

If I say yes to this, what must I say no to?

(and a follow up - )

What are the "no’s" you need to get clear on to make a brave choice to say "Yes"?

Saying 'yes' means saying 'no'.  Often we may not stop to consider what we're saying no to.  There is always a 'no' involved.  As I prepare for my retreat and the simple act of turning away from digital devices for 11 days, I realize I'm saying 'no' to things that give me joy and a sense of connection.  The saying 'no' allows for more space to say 'yes' to a deeper listening and hopefully a greater sense of connection with God and those around me.

To what are you saying 'yes' and saying 'no' to in your walk with Christ?

Scriptures for Sunday:

Church Around the Table (CATT)

Judges 4

Questions that will be considered in CATT worship:

* Tell about a time you participated in a group that worked well together.

* What parts of this story surprise you?

* Throughout scripture, God uses unexpected and unlikely people to bring about God’s work.  How does this story invite you to both see and participate in the work of God’s justice and mercy?

* Share a story of an “unlikely person” you know of who has helped to accomplish God’s work.

Saying "yes" to paying attention.

The Summer Day

Who made the world?
Who made the swan, and the black bear?
Who made the grasshopper?
This grasshopper, I mean—
the one who has flung herself out of the grass,
the one who is eating sugar out of my hand,
who is moving her jaws back and forth instead of up and down—
who is gazing around with her enormous and complicated eyes.
Now she lifts her pale forearms and thoroughly washes her face.
Now she snaps her wings open, and floats away.
I don't know exactly what a prayer is.
I do know how to pay attention, how to fall down
into the grass, how to kneel down in the grass,
how to be idle and blessed, how to stroll through the fields,
which is what I have been doing all day.
Tell me, what else should I have done?
Doesn't everything die at last, and too soon?
Tell me, what is it you plan to do
with your one wild and precious life?
