LPB 45/2022

SMASH AND GRAB, SIOUX LOOKOUT ON

At approximately 05.30 AM on Sunday 03 July 2022, two persons smashed the show window of a retail jewellery business located in Sioux Lookout ON and stole a relatively small value of jewellery that was left out of safe. Two suspects have been arrested.

Tips:
  • Do not leave jewellery of any value in show windows overnight, or anywhere else it can be seen from outside the store. Put it in a safe, into a locked drawer or even out of sight on the floor behind the showcase if you do not have enough rooms in your safes.
  • Metal shutters, laminated anti-shatter film or bars on exterior windows and doors can prevent or slow entry.
  • Video evidence is valuable to police and may help prevent further such burglaries. Make sure your camera system is operating properly and that cameras cover all areas of the store, including the storefront.

ATTEMPTED GOLD-SELLING FRAUD, CALGARY AB

Our LPB 40/2022 of 09 June 2022 reported a gold selling fraud which took place on Aurora ON, and which resulted in a very large loss for the jeweller. We have since received a report of a very similar fraud, fortunately this time unsuccessful, which occurred at a retail jewellery business on Thursday 30 June 2022 in Calgary AB. It is possible that one or more of the same persons was involved. If so, it is clear that the fraudsters are making their way across Canada as they look for targets. We recommend jewellers review and act on the tips below to avoid becoming victims of such frauds:

Tips:
  • Private citizens offering to sell small values of gold to jewellers is a common occurrence. However, offers from unknown persons to sell kilograms of gold at a time should be treated with the utmost caution!
  • Valid government-issued photo identification is a requirement for the sale of gold. Insist on seeing and if necessary verifying identification before moving ahead with any purchase. An inability or refusal on the part of the seller to show identification is a clear red flag! Do NOT move ahead with any purchase of gold without valid identification!
  • Do not be tempted by unrealistically low offers! If the offer seems too good to be true, it probably is!
  • Disbursing very large cash payments to unknown persons, or without valid documentation, is likely not FINTRAC-compliant and may have serious legal consequences for jewellers.
  • Generally speaking, losses that result from sales or transactions that you willingly enter into, even if these losses occur as a result of a trick or deception on the part of another person, are NOT INSURED
