People always ask us what the difference is between Antique Chinese Rose Canton, Rose Medallion, and Rose Mandarin Porcelain. The similarities of these 3 types of porcelain are that they all were produced in China in the 19th century and have the word rose in their name. Rose refers to the pink overglaze in all pieces ranging from pale pink to a deep raspberry hue. The following examples from our inventory and the definitions will help explain the differences. Rose Canton Porcelain depicts only flowers, birds, butterflies, insects, fruit, and fish - never people! Examples of this classification are a pair of graduated platters as well as a dish with a matching cover.

Rose Medallion Porcelain will have panels of people as well as panels of birds, butterflies, insects, fruit, and fish all of which are set on a white background. Quite often, these panels are alternated in a piece. The finer pieces were made between 1830 and 1860. A few examples are a plate in the shape of a leaf, a creamer, and a pair of vases.

Rose Mandarin Porcelain features people. Fauna and flowers will usually be found only on the rim of a plate, edging on an article or surrounding people. Also, many of the people are in settings such as a courtyard or a garden. Occasionally, you will find them inside. Due to its colors, subject matter, and wonderful workmanship, this is the most popular of the 3 categories. Examples are a creamer, a brush pot, and a vase.
