Upcoming Programs at Camp Hancock State Historic Site

BISMARCK, N.D. – The public is invited to "Weather Day" and "Taking Photos" at Camp Hancock State Historic Site, located at 101 E. Main Ave. in Bismarck. 

Aug. 4 “Weather Day,” 12-3 p.m. Camp Hancock was home to the U.S. Weather Bureau from 1894 until 1940. Our first annual “Weather Day” features activities from Gateway to Science, Bismarck State College, and the National Weather Service, along with tornadoes in a bottle and other weather-related activities. J.P. Martin from the National Weather Service will present about weather balloons and how they work from 1-1:30 p.m., and musician KittyKo will perform from 2-2:30 p.m. Cookies and lemonade will be served. This free event is open to all ages. Day cares and day camps are welcome. Children must be accompanied by an adult.

Aug. 19 “Taking Photos with Film,” 1-3 p.m. Join Site Supervisor Johnathan Campbell as he leads a free hands-on program detailing how to use a number of vintage film cameras, including loading, shooting, and developing the film. Participants will have the opportunity to take photos with the cameras and assist in the film developing process.

Camp Hancock is home to the oldest standing building in Bismarck and has the oldest standing church in North Dakota as well as a 1909 locomotive engine on display. Both Camp Hancock and Bismarck are celebrating 150th anniversaries this year.
