Oops: First Friday Film Discussion is on this Friday
Not last Friday ...
Join us on Friday July 8, the second Friday in July at 7:00pm for a discussion of the 2020 film, "Cowboys." Here is the link for the discussion.
Plot summary: Trans boy Joe's troubled but well-intentioned father, Troy, takes off with him into the Montana wilderness, pursued by police, after his wife, Sally, from whom he has recently separated, refuses to let Joe live as his authentic self. See the trailer here. The film is available on Kanopy and Hoopla for free, and other streaming services for a nominal fee.

Poem as Portal
Saturday, July 9 from 10-noon on Zoom
“Poem as Portal allows me to discover new openings through my own and others’ reactions to the images and possibilities in the poem. It is really quite a remarkable process. I am fascinated with the experiences of consciousness and creativity I encounter in these sessions.” ~Lonnie Weinheimer
Friends take a single poem where they need it to go, and from that new perspective discover what had been hidden. Join thoughtful, respectful seekers in new explorations, and share in the harvest. If you are not already on Judith Goedeke’s monthly mailing list, contact her through Breeze to receive this month's poem, queries, quotes and Zoom link. Everyone joining in should bring a journal or other materials to use during time for quiet reflection. You are warmly invited.

And for the Children ...
Children's Summer Program - On the 1st through 3d Sunday each month, children of grade-school age will have their own program, with games, crafts and perhaps some surprises. Usually, the children join their families for about the first 20 minutes of meeting, and then leave with their adult leaders for their program. They will be returned to their parents at the rise of meeting.
Junior Meeting - On the 4th Sunday each month, there's a treasured opportunity for children ages 5 to 11 to meet together in worship, accompanied by a few adult Friends. Meeting begins at 10:00, either in the memorial garden, or in the white house if needed for inclement weather.
For the younger children, ages 0 through kindergarten, the Nursery opens from 10 a.m. to 11:30 each Sunday in the white house.

For Current (and Future) Couch Potato Activists
Megan Donohue shared a bit of inspiration for us all to consider:
This morning WPFW aired Amanda Gorman's poem from Biden/Harris' inauguration, The Hill We Climb. Always inspiring and motivating to listen to. The last line is
"the new dawn blooms as we free it
for there is always light if only we're brave enough to see it,
if only we're brave enough to be it."
Friends see this light and know this light. Resmaa Menakem, author of The Quaking of America: an Embodied Guide to Navigating our Nation's Upheaval and Racial Reckoning, says racism is a collective problem that needs to be healed collectively. So many social/economic problems are collective problems, that need to be healed collectively.
The couch potato activists see the light and hold concerns in the light, we also are brave enough to be the light. Let's acknowledge the collective actions we have taken. This week let us use the couch potato outreach form to share where we have been brave, where we have been the light and where we have taken action.
Next week, will send an email with suggestions for actions to take.

Baltimore Yearly Meeting Sessions
BYM Annual Sessions will be held on line and in person, August 1 - 9 at Hood College in Frederick, MD. Hood College now requires advance registration for anyone who will be on campus, so if you are planning to attend in person you must register by July 15. Ten days. Just sayin'. The Peace Testimony and the Ukraine War:

The BYM Working Group on U.S. Militarism and War brings us an excellent panel to talk about how the peace testimony leads us in considering the war in Ukraine. The panel includes Helena Cobban, Bob Dockhorn, and Michael Beer, all of whom have deep experience, not just with the peace testimony, but specifically with Ukraine and Russia. What to the Slave is the Fourth of July?
On July 5, 1852, abolitionist Frederick Douglass gave a speech at Corinthian Hall in Rochester, New York. At that time, an estimated 3.5 million people were enslaved, comprising 14% of the population of the United States, according to the National Museum of African American History and Culture. The event was intended to commemorate Independence Day and the signing of the Declaration of Independence, though Douglass’ powerful oration became the most memorable portion of the event. It was here that Douglass, who had himself escaped enslavement 14 years earlier, delivered what has become one of his best-known speeches. “What to the Slave Is the Fourth of July? Yesterday morning, on July 4, National Public Radio aired a recitation of Douglass's speech, recorded in the summer of 2020 by five of his descendants, all of whom are young people dealing with a world still not healed from racism. Listen to their reading here.
