Pro-life demonstrators in Washington celebrate outside the Supreme Court June 24, as the court overruled the landmark Roe v. Wade abortion decision in its ruling in the Dobbs case on a Mississippi law banning most abortions after 15 weeks. (CNS photo/Evelyn Hockstein, Reuters)

50 years of prayers fulfilled

On the solemnity of the Sacred Heart of Jesus, June 24, the U.S. Supreme Court overturned its previous rulings in Roe v. Wade and Planned Parenthood v. Casey, holding that there is no longer a federal constitutional right to an abortion. Catherine Phillips, respect life director of the Diocese of Little Rock, called it a "happy day,” but said “there’s lots of work to do here to support women that are unexpectedly pregnant, to support families in need.”
With the Supreme Court's June 24 ruling, in how many states is abortion illegal?

A. 10
B. 20
C. 50

(Answer at the bottom)

JUST ONE MINUTE

Most friends and family members have nicknames for each other. Many of those are so intimate that they are only spoken in the family house. Some are not and are used at all times. Nicknames communicate a closeness, a special knowing of the person. In Mark 3:17 Jesus gives James and John a nickname. He calls them sons of thunder. I wonder if he is referring to them or their dad.

Reflection: Spend some time today with Jesus. What is a nickname he would give you to communicate his deep knowing of you and nearness? What is a nickname you would call Jesus that communicates who he is for you?

St. Kateri Tekakwitha

July 14

The daughter of a Mohawk chief and Algonquin woman, Kateri was orphaned in a smallpox epidemic that left her partially blind and disfigured. She was baptized by a French missionary visiting her village in New York state. But, her faith and refusal to marry caused trouble, and she fled to an Indian community near Montreal, where she was revered by French and Indians alike for her mystical gifts and kindness. The “Lily of the Mohawk” is the patron of Native Americans, refugees and the disabled.

DAVE SAYS

Dad's inheritance decision

My father-in-law passed away and left life insurance policies to my wife and each of her siblings. My wife received more than the others. Her sister who received the smallest amount is angry, wants more and is causing a real dilemma within the family. I told my wife I am OK with doing what she feels is best. What are your thoughts?
Dad had a plan.
