Upcoming Special Legislative Session August 8th

Call for Action

The Governor has called for a Special Legislative Session to begin on August 8th. AAUW is part of a coalition of non-profit groups who share a common concern about the lack of state funding for so many needed programs for so long.  Teachers salaries are one of many needs, including early childhood education, expanded Medicaid eligibility for pregnant women, and much more.

The Arkansas Legislature wants to take away the hundreds of millions of dollars it’s hoarded and give it to Arkansas's wealthiest and corporations for a tax cut. When we lose revenue, we end up cutting budgets of critical programs that help our communities thrive. For the past 10 years, our state budget has been shrinking, and outcomes for kids have gotten worse. This is not a coincidence. We need to be investing in schools, health care and infrastructure, not investing in a tax system that mostly benefits the wealthy. For more information, click here.

Also, the Governor proposed and some legislators are reportedly rejecting, a call for a raise in teacher's salaries. Please see the statement below from AAUW Little Rock member Senator Linda Chesterfield, as posted on Facebook:

"I need everyone to reach out to your respective legislators and tell them you want teacher salaries to increase rather than giving rich folks and businesses another tax cut! While you’re at it tell them all school employees need a raise so our children will be better able to succeed! Just google Arkansas legislators and call, email or text the ones that represent you!"

New AAUW National Community Hub

The National AAUW membership online portal is called the "Community Hub." All members are now connected to the national AAUW organization via their email address on record instead of their membership number. You can renew your AAUW Little Rock membership, update your personal information, and make donations online.

Go to aauw.org and click on "Log In" in the upper right hand corner. This will take you to a page where you will create your new user ID (your email) and a password.  Once you have the ID and password, you can access your own account to update your information like a new phone number.  To renew, go to "My Affiliations".  You should see  "AAUW Little Rock".  Select "Renew" and follow the instructions.  It takes a bit of persistence to get to the pay page but you can pay your dues or make a donation with a credit card there.

The AAUW website with additional information about the Community Hub is here.

Nell Matthews, AAUW Little Rock Treasurer, is available to assist all who would rather pay by check.  Her address is 7200 Briarwood Drive, Little Rock, 72205.  Dues are $87.

Questions about your membership or your dues? Click here to email Nell.

Appreciation to all who have already renewed your dues!

Statement on Dobbs v. Jackson Supreme Court Decision from Gloria Blackwell, AAUW CEO:

"The American Association of University Women (AAUW) strongly condemns the U.S. Supreme Court’s decision in Dobbs v. Jackson Women’s Health Organization. The decision overturns the landmark Roe v. Wade ruling that established abortion as a constitutionally protected right nearly 50 years ago and ignores the will of the American people, 80% of whom support legal abortion.

AAUW believes everyone has the right to make decisions about their own reproductive lives without government interference. Abortion access is vital to women’s ability to control their lives, bodies and futures. Without reproductive freedom, there can be no equity.

Being able to choose whether and when to become a parent improves women’s well-being and fosters economic security—a crucial component of AAUW’s mission. This is particularly important in a country that lacks accessible maternal health care, paid caregiving leave and workplace protections for pregnant workers.

The Court’s decision hurts all of us, but it will do the most harm to low-income people, women of color, immigrants, people with disabilities and LGBTQ+ people, because these groups already face substantial barriers to accessing reproductive services and health care.

While the Court’s decision is a major setback for all Americans, AAUW remains steadfast in our commitment to protecting reproductive rights, a vital component of gender equity."

Celebrating 100 Years

The AAUW Little Rock Branch is celebrating its first 100 years.  It was formed in 1922 from a group of women who organized in 1905 and called themselves "The Little Rock College Club." The LR College Club was organized for the purpose associating the college women of the town in intellectual and social fellowship and promoting all state and local educational movements.

All of the first branch members were educated out-of-state. In 1922, there were no Arkansas colleges that were certified by the national AAUW organization for AAUW membership.

Shown here is Marie Curie. In the 1920's, AAUW
helped raise money to purchase a gram of radium for Marie Curie
