Class of 2023: Business Communication, Outreach, and the Media Seminar
The Class of 2023 recently completed the Business Communication, Outreach, and the Media seminar held in Chicago. This seminar provides participants the opportunity to learn appropriate approaches to communicating with the public on behalf of agriculture, gain practical skills in crafting a personal, persuasive message for mass media, learn specific techniques in engaging with the consuming public via social media, gain an understanding of the consuming public’s perception of agriculture, and how these messages are obtained.
The seminar started off with Mr. Chris Kennedy presenting to the class on his leadership journey. That evening the class visited the Historic Wagner Farm where the class was hosted by Blake Lanphier (IALP ’20), Jon Kuester and Todd Price (IALP ’14).
Thursday the class was hosted by ADM at their global headquarters. Greg Webb, ADM’s Vice-President of State Government Relations welcomed the class to HQ. Anne-Marie St. Germaine spent the morning with the class discussion communications and what tools they have in their toolboxes to use. The afternoon was rounded out by Illinois Farm Bureau’s Jeff Brown on communication in the media and mock interviews.
Friday morning the class welcomed Dave Donnan to discuss being constantly connected with our smartphone, watches and food. Josh Flint & Pam Smith (IALP ’02) finished out the seminar with discussions on communications in the workplace and social media.
The next seminar is the GROWMARK Global Challenges Seminar, and it will take place July 20-22 in Chicago.
