The City of Calgary launches new support for local food and beverage entrepreneurs

Starting this month, local eateries, brewhouses and budding entrepreneurs can access customized support from the new Business Experience Representative Team. It’s a one-stop shop for business applicants who are interested in opening a restaurant or brewery in Calgary. Ultimately, this new initiative will create faster and more predictable outcomes for business owners.

Using feedback from ongoing work with local industry, The City identified opportunities to improve customer service for business applicants. The Business Experience Representatives will support local food and beverage entrepreneurs through the permitting and licensing process.

“Healthy businesses are the foundation of a thriving economy, and we want Calgarians to enjoy a streamlined and successful entrepreneurial journey,” says Ulrik Seward, Chief Building Official, Calgary Building Services. “The Business Experience Representatives will provide greater consistency and predictability of service, reducing the permit and licensing timelines for customers.” Restaurateurs and brewers can contact a Business Experience Rep to ask questions about application processes, work through any issues that are impacting the status of their existing applications or receive clarity about development permits, building permits or other approvals needed to open a restaurant or brewery in Calgary.

“Our goal is to make it faster and easier to get your restaurant or brewery business open,” says Seward.

In addition to the new in-person support, local food and beverage entrepreneurs can take advantage of enhanced web content, prerecorded webinars and waived fees for business licensing until March 16, 2023.

This is just one of the programs we have in place improves processes for businesses. We continue to listen to feedback on how we can improve processes for the business community to get you open faster. For more information about how to open a restaurant or brewery in Calgary, visit calgary.ca/ber.

Memorial Parkway Program – Have your say on flood barrier plans
Building flood protection with natural spaces to gather and commemorate

As we recently witnessed, a permanent flood barrier is a critical piece of infrastructure needed that will help protect people, homes and businesses in Sunnyside/Hillhurst from river flooding and we remain committed to delivering a 1:100 year barrier. At the same time, we recognize the barrier’s location along an iconic stretch of Calgary is an important consideration and we need to do it right.
To help increase flood resiliency and create spaces that enhance the connection with the river, natural environment and commemorate our heritage, The City is combining this work through the Memorial Parkway Program that will see the flood barrier combined with new spaces for commemoration, vibrant and dynamic public spaces, and opportunities for a reimagined Memorial Drive with enhanced ways to get around.
Program Timeline
Starting this week, we’re embarking on a series of engagements with Calgarians about how to integrate the flood barrier within the existing community.
  • The first step is updating the vision for the area that will help guide future development, including the flood barrier and the Memorial Parkway. We’re inviting all Calgarians to take part by answering a quick three question survey, which is open until July 15.
  • Later this summer, we’ll invite Calgarians to share their input online and in-person on potential design options for the area.
  • The final design will be shared this winter with plans to move into construction on the flood barrier component in spring 2023. The barrier is estimated to be complete in 2025.
