Staff Picks

We love to share what we’ve been reading/watching/listening to/exploring! Here are Shannon and Susan’s recommendations! (Note: Click on the title to get to our catalog record for the item.)

An Elderly Lady Must Not Be Crossed: Stories by Helene Tursten

I am normally not a mystery reader, but when I saw this charming little book, I picked it up to peruse, and finished reading it within a couple hours. First off, don’t think that the titled lady is a sweet, crime-solving spinster like Mrs. Marple. Granted, she’s just as clever, but I believe that a psychiatrist would classify our protagonist (?) as a psychopath. Maud makes her way through life always looking out for her interests in a cold, calculating fashion. The book is divided into 7 stories. Some are memories of her youth, when she had to deal with childhood bullies or a problematic coworker. Other stories are more recent, as she takes on an unscrupulous antique dealer or an assailant during her African vacation. If you enjoy Maud’s adventures, we also have more of her escapades in “An Elderly Lady is Up to No Good.” —Shannon

STEAM Kit / Microscope

On a shelf in my living room, there is an artifact from my childhood. It was my favorite present: a real microscope. When I received it for Christmas, I spent hours staring at bits of twine, bug wings, salt, paper, hair, and the best thing ever…pond water. While I didn’t become a famous scientist, I did develop a fascination with the unseen world. You can share that experience with your children. Milan Public Library has a microscope kit you can borrow and use to make your own scientific discoveries. Make sure you get some pond water from over at Gump Lake…it will amaze your kids. —Shannon

Rock, Paper Scissors by Alice Feeney

If you start reading “Rock, Paper Scissors” by Alice Feeney, don’t plan on doing anything else. Author Feeney is known as the “Queen of the Twist”. This is a psychological suspense book of a marriage, told by two different perspectives, and you wonder, who really knows their spouse or what they are capable of? This book gets the reader so invested — it is the ultimate definition of a page turner. Just when the reader thinks they’ve figured out the book, the ending shocks, stuns and surprises. Probably the best book I’ve read in quite a while and although I told myself “just one more chapter” I did stay up until 3 a.m. to finish it. —Susan
