Meetings for Worship and Children's Programs

On Sunday mornings we gather in a "blended" meeting at 10 am, in the meeting house and on Zoom.  For those attending virtually, here is the Zoom link for Sunday worship and second hours.  Please scroll down to the box below, titled "How We Meet for Worship" for details about the blended meeting, about outdoor meetings at 8:45 and 10:00 am on Sundays, and about Sunday evening and mid-week meetings.

Junior Meeting - This Sunday is 4th Sunday -- time for a treasured opportunity for children ages 5 to 11 to meet together in worship, accompanied by a few adult Friends.  Meeting begins at 10:00, either in the memorial garden, or in the white house if needed for inclement weather.

Children's Summer Program -  On 4th Sunday, children age 5 - 11 will be in Junior meeting (see above.)  The 10:00 adult outdoor meeting will meet behind the meetinghouse.

For the smaller children, ages 0 through kindergarten, the Nursery opens from 10 a.m. to 11:30 each Sunday.

In and Around Adelphi Meeting

Everything you want to know about (maybe possibly) teaching a First Day School class...

in 1/2 hour

At 12:15 this Sunday, join RE committee members and teachers on Zoom or in person (table behind the meeting house) to learn everything you want to know about becoming a First Day School teacher.  We still have some open positions. (Zoom link is the same as for meeting for worship.)

The soul is healed by being with children.

Minutes - What We Did

Between the hours of 12 and 2 on Sunday, June 12, 2022

Draft minutes from the June 12 meeting for business are available here for your reference and corrections. Please send any corrections to recordingclerk@adelphifriends.org.

P.S.

An Apprentice Opportunity?

The Silent Announcements editor will be away for a while in October.  The thought occurs to the editor that it would be a good idea to have someone else who knows how to put these news bits together. The editor would welcome the interest of someone with "next generation level" ease with publications technology (who can probably teach the editor a thing or two) or someone with a good heart and limited technical ability - because it's really not all that difficult.  Love of writing seems to be essential.  If interested, please contact the editor at this link in Breeze.

Quakers in the Wider World

Teaching Universal Human Dignity

June 30, 2022 at 3 p.m. ET

Many of you know that Chloe Schwenke is very active in advocating for the human dignity of LGBTQI+ people around the world. On Thursday, June 30th she will be speaking at the Center for Strategic and International Studies at 3pm ET. This event brings together the two top officials in the US Government on LGBTQI+ issues internationally, and two "civil society representatives''.

Chloe will be trying to broaden the discussion beyond the civil and political rights discourse as framed in diplomatic terms to embrace a wider, less legalistic, and more morally direct consideration of universal human dignity (aka "that of God in every one"), and of ethical concerns that speak to a "truly human" quality of life.

To connect online, register for this free event at this link.

Quaker Spring

The Quaker Spring 2022 summer gathering brings together Friends from all branches of Quakerism, to share what Spirit-led Quakerism is about at its core.  Jolee Robinson is meeting virtually with this group this weekend and sends her greetings.

Baltimore Yearly Meeting Weekly Announcements...

        ...are here.  They include

  • News of the annual (virtual) gathering of the Fellowship of Friends of African Descent, August 12 to 14.  Find more information here.
  • A request for help with transporting STRIDE campers to camps (mileage and rental vehicles can be arranged).
  • Information and registration for BYM's annual sessions, coming up August 1 - 7 at Hood College in Frederick, MD.  This is a hybrid meeting;  registration for participating in person is due by July 15,  and
  • Pendle Hill hiring a full time cook for the summer season - an awesome job in an awesome community.
  • And, as always, much more.

Friends Journal

This month's edition of Friends Journal is on vocal ministry... when to speak... when to not...how to listen ... how to know when you are called to give a message.  A featured article by Sheldon Clark explores the experience of contemplative worship.  The article includes a poem by the same name that tracks the experience of seeking contemplative listening and prayer in the midst of our noisy lives.

There is an Inner Reminder and an Inner Rememberer (see John 14:26, 16:4)
who holds together all the disparate and fragmented parts of our lives,
who fills in all the gaps, who owns all the mistakes,
who forgives all the failures —  and who loves us into an ever-deeper life.
~ Fr. Richard Rohr

How Deep Is This Ocean?

New England Yearly Meeting sponsors a comprehensive program for Friends who are ready to go deeper in their spiritual explorations. The program, called Nurturing Faithfulness, includes two in-person long weekend conferences in September and May and a year's worth of study, contemplation and worship sharing with other Friends in the program.  Adelphi Meeting can assist with the cost of fees and transportation for the two conferences.  If you feel led to take this step, don't let cost stand in your way.

You can find more information about the program here. Applications are being accepted on a rolling basis until the program fills with a final deadline of September 1.  Melanie Gifford has participated in the program and is happy to have a conversation with anyone who is considering exploring this option.

Mmm...Homemade Pupusas

Carol Nezzo is supporting a friend who makes pupusas in her home for sale on several holiday occasions.  The next opportunity is July 2, when Veronica will offer three kinds of pupusas -- beans and cheese, zucchini with cheese, and spinach with cheese.  We can place orders (at $2.25 each) through Carol. (Please find Carol's contact information in Breeze.)

Please specify how many of each kind of pupusa you would like, and give your name and phone number.  Carol will contact you to let you know where to send your advance payment.  Place your order soon -- Veronica does have limits on how many of these delicious items she can make!

Thinking Through Reparations?

Three opportunities:

  • FCNL hosted a conversation on "H.R. 40 and the Quaker Push for Reparations," with FCNL’s Domestic Policy Associate, Abibat Rahman-Davies, and co-founder/principal of reparationsWorks, Lucy Duncan.  The conversation (recorded here) is rich with information about why reparations is due, how Friends meetings are beginning to take on the idea seriously, and what action might look like.
  • Pendle Hill is hosting a two-part webinar with tom kunesh of Nashville Meeting on land acknowledgment and reparations.  The sessions are offered via Zoom on August 9 and 11th, 7:30 to 9:00 pm. This review centers the ultimate goals of writing land acknowledgments, including relationship building, identifying and restoring erased history of local sites, and returning land to native peoples.  Learn more and register here.

  • Here's an excellent article by Kevin L. Matthews II, an award-winning investment advisor, on the cost of racist practices to the U.S. economy.  Reparations are not just about slavery, he demonstrates, but about the stubbornly persistent racism built into U.S. economic systems.  Citing the racial wage gap and unfair mortgage lending practices as just two examples, he points to "the $16 trillion lost [to the U.S. economy] because of racist practices that have occurred in the past 20 years alone."

How We Meet For Worship

On Sunday mornings, we gather in a "blended" meeting at 10 am:  In the meeting house and on Zoom.  For those attending virtually,  here is the Zoom link for Sunday worship and second hours. For those attending in person, masks and vaccinations are still required, to protect the vulnerable among us. Also, we can't sing in the meeting room.  Please see the general guidelines here for everyone who enters the meetinghouse for worship.

On Sunday mornings at 8:45 and at 10:00, there is an outdoor meeting in the Memorial Garden. These meetings are not 'blended" with the Zoom-and-indoor-meeting. (At 10:00 on the 4th Sunday of each month, we meet behind the meetinghouse, to leave the Memorial Garden available for Junior Meeting.

On Sunday evenings at 7 pm, Adelphi Meeting convenes an on-line meeting for worship. Here is the Zoom link for that meeting. (Meeting ID is 823 9626 3173 and passcode is 734636).

On Wednesdays at noon, Adelphi Meeting convenes a midweek meeting for worship for healing with a concern for a broken nation. Here is the recurring link to the Wednesday noon meetings.

Takoma Park Friends Meeting Preparative meets on Sundays in-person indoors at 11:30 am and by Zoom at 7:30 pm. On Thursdays at 6:30 pm, Friends meet in-person outdoors (weather permitting).

See more details for all these gatherings, including Takoma Park Friends gatherings, in this attachment.
