Post Status: The Community for WordPress Professionals
StellarWP

“To create today means to create dangerously. Every publication is a deliberate act, and that act makes us vulnerable to the passions of a century that forgives nothing.”

Albert Camus

Well, it has been a week in WordPress, hasn’t it?

Sometimes it feels the ground is moving under our feet in the WordPress space. Some changes are afoot on the Post Status team too, so we decided to open this space to address them and the discord rippling through the WordPress community. If you want a TL;DR I’ll quote Tammie Lister in Post Status Slack today:

It’s a big project and everyone doesn’t know everyone well enough to casual comment anymore. That’s good and amazing but we have to remember how we interact. I am very tired of people thinking it’s a tiny cottage project and then upsetting people. —Ed.

Grounding Ourselves: A Safe Place for Conflict Needs Trust

High-level spats in the WordPress business ecosystem are a reality, but on Twitter they can become low-level competitive exchanges. Maybe they could be moved into more private conversations without character limits if the goal is to resolve conflicts rather than intensify them.

The world is full of existential crises. Most of us rely on WordPress and its culture of cooperation for our livelihood, and we have pretty small-scale, simple lives. Animosity between leaders of the largest companies in this space lands heavily on us.

Many of us bill by the hour, finish a project, and look for the next. We don’t care — and can’t care — about market share, market cap and investments. We have jobs and families to worry about. Not who owns the hosting market.

The inevitable and necessary conflicts in our open source community have a place where they can and often do spill out — Post Status Slack. The value that comes out of that (and the restraint that is exercised there more than it’s enforced) builds trust and comes from a place of trust that exists only because we protect and nurture it.

Let’s go more kindly and carefully together.

—Lindsey Miller, CEO

Going Slowly to Go Far…Together

As I return this week officially to Post Status, I return to a lot of conversation in our space. Nothing new. Part of the beauty and excellence of WordPress is healthy, productive, constructive discourse.

We want Post Status to be YOUR forum for those conversations that improve the lives of our WordPress professionals and the humans we serve. A lot has happened, and a lot will happen … please use Post Status, and in particular channels relevant to your thoughts and ideas for healthy discussions. But with one very strong admonition — make it about the work, never personal, and always in a way that moves what we do forward in the world we serve. And with one stern warning … as long as I’m here, I’ll never tolerate personal attacks in any way. Keep it about the topic, not the person. Always and forever.

We need these conversations. I believe WordPress and you in particular, our incredible members, can be the standard for making our world better, one step at a time, and shining light in our communities all over the world.

On a personal and professional note, I have to do my work drastically differently than I have for the past 15 years. I’m taking it very slowly — or working to do so. My time off — thanks to Lindsey who remains our CEO and our incredible team — was everything I needed. I hope to talk about it soon, publicly, and share my insights and journey. But in the meantime, I’m counting my blessings for this community of truly amazing humans with immense and profound gratitude. YOU make this work something I want to come back to. With love and grace and gratitude.

—Cory

Goodbye But Not Farewell

I’ve played many roles in the WordPress space for the past 16+ years - user, developer, meetup organizer, WordCamp organizer, volunteer, contributor, product manager, freelancer, meme creator… The one thing that has always impressed me and made me proud is how passionate the WordPress community is — especially when it comes to helping others.

Volunteering for a full day at a WordCamp, sharing knowledge with both young people and those trying to improve their lives and businesses, or those who sacrifice their time (and often money) to report on news and events — that’s our WordPress community. All of this (and more) benefits us. More than just code.

I believe we all want WordPress to grow and thrive, but we have to be careful to act in a way that’s respectful to us all as human beings. At the end of the day that is how we want to be treated — and we should be. For me this has been reinforced within the last few years and will be something I continue to strive for myself in how I treat others and view their opinions.

As I transition away from Post Status to focus on a new opportunity within the WordPress space, I will be just as involved in the community as I’ve ever been. It’s important that there are stages where people can have the important conversations, and I firmly believe that Post Status will continue to be a fine home for the discussions (both positive and critical) that need to happen.

WordPress belongs to all of us. I hope we can give it the attention, respect, leadership, and community-strengthening focus that it deserves. We should. We must.

Change Means Growth and Serving Our Community Better

I’ve been thinking about how to best cope with the ever-increasing firehose blast of WordPress news to focus on the ideas, conversations, and voices that matter most each week. Our goal with the newsletter has always been to be a good filter for you, focusing on the greatest value for the greatest number of people rather than being comprehensive in scope. You’ll probably be seeing more at poststatus.com/news and less in the newsletter — more links to the site and less full text.

Keeping all that happens in WordPress in front of us and zeroing in on the key issues is demanding work. I signed up to work with Post Status because Brian and David were great curators — who just needed an editor. That role has expanded a lot over the years, but our whole team shares in the curating and ruminating role — and so does everyone engaged with Post Status on Slack and Twitter. You too.

Deeper, thoughtful insight and analysis make slower work and harder to come by. I hope to model it once in a while, and we’ve got more in the bin. We want to invite especially our business members to submit story ideas, questions, sources, and articles for publication at Post Status.

Like the WordPress space, Post Status is always changing too. As David and Talisha transition to other roles, we’re looking at new ways to work and more friends to bring on board to support this special, necessary space.

Building the WordPress Workforce

Most of you know me as the Director of Operations for Post Status. As of July 1st, I will be on a new adventure of my own with Cory Miller at my side. Over the last few months, I have been working with a company that helps United States Army personnel find their next career path once they separate from the military.

We had the great idea to start WP Connects LLC to help these amazing men and women start careers in WordPress! This is an exciting opportunity for all of us. It will help us to bring people into the WordPress community who have great skillsets and experience relevant to every role in our industry.

Our first training class will be in August 2022. We need mentors who can dedicate themselves to a few hours a week and help our students along their journey. This will only be a 10-week time commitment per class. If you are interested in being a mentor please reach out to me!

We also have a new program rolling out on August 1, 2022. It will allow these men and women to find internships or employment. The US government offers employers incentives to hire and work with separating military personnel. If your company is experiencing a hiring need or if you would be willing to sponsor an intern, reach out to us as well.

Together we can help these men and women successfully transition into their new career paths.
