CARL Leadership 2022
CARL BOARD UPDATES

Since the start of 2022, CARL, like all COVID life events, slowed down. Nevertheless, we had great success with our second virtual CARL conference! Approximately 100 library professionals attended the two day conference, which featured two great keynotes, Dr. Tara Yosso and Sandy Enriquez. In addition to the conference, CARL Interest Groups hosted workshops (SCIL Works and DIAL online “chats”) this year. Read below for more updates from the CARL board…

Advocacy

Earlier last month, the CARL Board lent its support to ACRL’s efforts in advocating for public access to federally-funded research by sending letters to members of Congress seeking their support in protecting Sec. 2527 of the U.S. Innovation and Competition Act (S. 1260).

Membership Meetings

Based on the positive feedback received at the CARL Conference general membership meeting, the CARL Board is excited to announce regularly scheduled membership meetings. Each membership meeting will focus on a targeted topic. A survey on possible meeting topics will be sent to the CARL listserv and posted in the Your Membership portal soon. Please stay tuned for additional details.

Board Recruitment for 2023

As Fall approaches, CARL will conduct an election for leaders to run the organization. This election cycle includes a Vice-President, Director-at-Large from University of California, and Membership Director. CARL is a member-led organization that impacts librarians in the state, region and nationally. The Nominations and Elections committee is inviting nominations of CARL/ACRL members who would make great leaders helping CARL meet its mission of advocating for academic and research librarians and library personnel, and all other information professionals that serve academic and research institutions. CARL provides these through a biannual conference, workshops, spaces to exchange ideas and award/grants to grow. If you have someone who would be a great leader, contact Kelly Janousek, kelly.janousek@csulb.edu.

DAL Liaison Assignments

Lastly, the CARL Executive Board would like to announce our 2022 Director-at-Large liaison role assignments:

Interest Group Coordinator: Edeama Onwuchekwa

My name is Dr. Edeama Onwuchekwa and I am the Equity and Engagement Librarian in San Diego Mesa College. On the CARL Executive Board, I serve as the Director-at-Large (Community Colleges) and also the Interest Group Coordinator. As the Interest Group Coordinator, I am the liaison between the interest group leaders and the CARL officers and Board of Directors. I have the responsibility to regularly inform Interest Group Leaders of CARL activities, and orient interest group leaders with respect to CARL policies and procedures. I will also seek to ensure that interest group programs and other activities are announced and reported in CARL publications, electronic communications, and other channels.

Awards Committee Liaison: Ken Lyons

Greetings fellow CARLers! I'm Ken Lyons, recently retired long-time reference librarian at UC Santa Cruz, serving my second of a two-year term as UC Director-at-Large. I've also been involved in CARL for over fifteen years in various capacities, and am a co-founder and chair-emeritus of the ALIGN interest group. As well as representing the perspective of UC librarians on the CARL Executive Board, I am chair of the ad-hoc Web Assessment Committee, charged with reviewing CARL's website and membership-management platform, and making recommendations for the future of these systems. I also serve as the Awards Committee Liaison, tasked with overseeing the efforts of CARL's four awards committees, two of which (Outstanding CARL Member and Research Grant) I currently chair.

ACRL Chapter Council Delegate: Laura Wimberley

My name is Laura Wimberley, and I serve as the Director-at-Large representing the California State University system. I’m also our liaison to the national Association of College & Research Libraries. My library career began when I earned my MLIS from San Jose State, so I’m a proud alumna of the CSU. I’ve been working at CSU Northridge since 2011, starting as an adjunct librarian. Currently I’m the Assessment Librarian, and I’ll also be stepping up as chair of our Department of Research, Instruction, and Outreach Services this summer. For the past three years, I’ve been a member of the CSUN Council of Library Dean’s Student Success Committee. The work the CSU does in supporting our first-generation students and other students who have overcome hurdles to reach higher education is crucially valuable. I hope to bring a focus on equity and measurable results to CARL.

Communications Officer: Beth Namei

I was just elected to be the Director-at-Large representing Private Institutions and will be serving as the first ever Communications Officer for CARL. As part of my inaugural duties, I will be fleshing out and documenting the responsibilities of this new role in collaboration with CARL Board members and key stakeholders, such as the CARL Newsletter Editor, the Website manager, and Interest Group chairs. The goal is to create a coordinated and united communications strategy for CARL and all of the various interest groups so our membership can get the most up-to-date information about various events and developments.

Save the Date! Fall Program 2022 - Pivot! Adaptation & Flexibility in Reference Services

When: Friday, December 2nd (half day)

Where: Online via Zoom

On Friday, December 2nd, CARLDIG-S will host a half day virtual program, “Pivot! Adaptation & Flexibility in Reference Services.” Attendees will hear from various presenters discussing experiences with change, adaption, and flexibility in a fluid academic environment. The COVID-19 pandemic proved reference professionals nimble as we navigated modality changes, budget constraints/cuts, loss of personnel/vacancies, and work life balance. As various libraries continue to discover a new normal, let’s discuss how pivoting impacted your services, individual selves, and user experiences. A call for proposals will be sent out in the fall, and more information will be available at the CARLDIG-S website: http://www.carl-acrl.org/ig/carldigs/ and our CARLDIG-S LibGuide.

For more information, please contact our Chair, Leanna Pagano, at lpagano@callutheran.edu. We hope to see you there!

SCIL: Southern California Instruction Librarians
Congratulations to our incoming Executive Board members, who are serving under the leadership of incoming Chair Kat Koziar. Thank you to all of the candidates who ran for office and all who voted! All terms begin July 2022.

MEMBER SPOTLIGHT

Britt Foster Head shot of Britt Foster, who is standing in front of a row of bookshelves

Where do you currently work, and what is your job title/role?

I am an associate librarian at California State University, Fresno: I work in our Research Services unit, which is our instruction and reference unit. I am liaison to several of our Agricultural Sciences departments, including Ag Business, Food Science and Nutrition, Plant Science, Viticulture and Enology, and Child and Family Science. I am also the coordinator of our Viticulture and Enology Library, a small collection embedded in our grape growing and winemaking program

Why did you join CARL? What do you most enjoy about being a CARL member?

CARL was highly recommended to me by several colleagues when I started a new, tenure-track role. My favorite thing about CARL is both the affinity and diversity I find within the membership: I love learning from and connecting with colleagues whose experiences parallel my institutional context, and, from those who work in a very different environment, with a different patron base. In particular, I value learning from my colleagues in community colleges, as I work with a lot of transfer students.

Are you working on anything special right now or in the near future you'd like to share with other CARL members?

Just before the pandemic, I completed a CSU system-wide Student Success Analytics fellowship through our institutional research office. It was a good opportunity to grapple with my own concerns around analytics, and to learn about course-level data I can access to target my outreach and student support work. I’m hoping to shape this into a research project looking at courses with high rates of Ds, Fs, and Withdraws within minoritized, first-gen, and Pell-eligible student populations, and if certain library-related interventions can support students enrolled in these courses towards more equitable outcomes.

What new approaches to your work have you tried recently? Have any of them been particularly successful or challenging?

I was fortunate to serve as co-chair of the ACRL Science and Technology Section Framework for Information Literacy task force, where we created a companion document to the Framework through a STEM lens. It’s renewed my energy to find ways to incorporate higher-level information literacy understanding into my instruction, especially pushing beyond the one-shot for alternative approaches that allow more embedded and scaffolded learning.  I’m early in investigating this, so a lot feels like a challenge! But, I’m excited by it, as well.

What’s something you recently read/watched/listened to that you can’t stop thinking about or is helping you process recent events? Why?

A lot of my self-care comes from my love of gardens and gardening, and I’m obsessed with Luis Barragán’s landscape architecture right now. The way he worked with light, color, and textures like rust, concrete and terra cotta are really inspiring, and I find them quietly joyful and serene. I have several books on his garden design on order, and I can't wait to read through them.

Ilene F. Rockman CARL/ACRL Conference Scholarship, 2022

Attending this year’s CARL conference was significant at this early stage of my career. I recently pivoted from one sector of academia to another and encountered the same issues that are endemic to both higher education and academia. I continue to feel isolated from a lack of community within librarianship, especially as a woman of color with a critical consciousness towards the field and my practice. However, the CARL conference introduced me to librarians, library workers, and fellow students that also share a spirit and commitment to equity, antiracism, and critical librarianship. Though the pushback to these practices and ideas are ever present at our institutions and workspaces, many of the presentations demonstrated how to enact gradual change without passiveness or complacency. I was especially inspired by keynote speaker, Sandy Enriquez, and her presentation on slow librarianship, outreach, and student-centered equitable and antiracist practices. I have always worked towards making my work and practice meaningful to the students I serve and sometimes that feels incredibly lonely. But I am thankful that I had the opportunity to attend this conference since it introduced me to many great BIPOC library workers and CARL members that share the same spirit and dedication to our work.

CARL Across the Pond: LILAC Conference Impressions
Kevin Augustine, Research & Instruction Librarian, Stanislaus State University

Summary of the event
The Library Information Literacy Advisory Council (LILAC) held its 16th annual conference at Manchester Metropolitan University from April 11-13, 2022. The conference is one of the largest in the United Kingdom dedicated to information literacy, with eight parallel sessions hosting over 50 presentations. Keynote speakers included Emily Drabinski, recently elected ALA president for 2023-24.

Presenting and/or attending a conference can be an incredible opportunity to share and network with others. Doing so overseas raises more excitement and new challenges. As the only presenter from California, the biggest challenges for me involved translation and interpretation, whether that was translating the British English language of concepts, services models and theories; interpreting frameworks of information literacy unique to U.K. institutions; or interpreting social etiquette and norms of an in-person event during a pandemic.

Shared purposes and goals, different language
During my time at the conference, the language barrier of translating British English librarianship concepts, service models, and theories became a unique challenge to overcome. Take a concept like digital fluency. Introduced in conjunction with information literacy in a framework by University of Liverpool librarians, digital fluency is defined as the ability to critically think about information while using digital platforms to act on a problem or collaborate with others. University of Liverpool librarians shared their development and integration of a framework connecting information literacy and digital fluency that aligned with their institution’s strategy titled Curriculum 2021. During the presentation, librarians used phrases like senior leaders (administrators), academic staff (themselves), and KnowHow (a comprehensive program of workshops facilitated through SpringShare), that on the surface sounds so foreign yet shares a common bond to how we refer to elements of our work environment.

Interpreting frameworks large and small
ACRL’s Framework is the predominant set of core conceptual understandings within information literacy for academic libraries in the United States. Rarely do we see interpretations of information literacy in a framework on a smaller, institutional level. In the United Kingdom, however, information literacy frameworks have been developed nationally and within individual institutions.

Librarians at the University of Sheffield discussed their project on integrating and evaluating the Information and Digital Literacy (IDL) Framework within the university’s Skills, Attributes and Employability program and in particular, recognizing the principles of being information literate within the mySkills portfolio, which tracks the progress of skills and attributes students achieve over their academic careers. The IDL Framework’s six literacies, similar to the ACRL Framework’s frames, demonstrate the depth of interconnected aspects within information literacy, uniquely developed within the university and influenced by the institution’s larger curriculum goals.

In-person engagement during the Pandemic
The COVID-19 pandemic’s disruption of academic librarianship is vast and the impact on services, modes of communicating and networking continues to be felt today. At the time of this writing, the thought of attending in-person events, even on your campus, may be met with opposition due to health and safety concerns. For librarians on tenure-track lines throughout California, we are faced with a dilemma of balancing these health and safety concerns with the prospects of advancing the research and scholarship of our discipline by attending events that showcase our commitment to our institutions.

While the conference facilitators made it clear to respect the choices attendees and presenters made with regard to social distancing, masks, and other safety measures, many conference participants from the U.K. did not wear masks or social distance. This made it a challenge to engage, given attendees from the United States, including myself, needed a negative test result to re-enter the country. Despite the difference in social norms and etiquette, the genuine interactions and conversations I had with others brought a surreal sense of normalcy.

I recommend CARL members dedicated to information literacy instruction consider sharing their work with others at future LILAC conferences. The excitement outweighs the challenges and the event offers Californians the opportunity to demonstrate our passion in advancing information literacy research to peers overseas.
