NHS Educator, Ceylan Swenson hosted 2 sold out tours for the Black History of Northport Walking Tour last Sunday.  It was a beautiful day for a tour up Main Street.  Gloria Green, a Northport native and descendant of Albert and Lottie Foulke was present at the tour.  The Foulkes were featured in Thelma Jackson's book, "African Americans in Northport - An Untold Story" (Available for purchase at the NHS shop).  News 12 highlighted this Juneteenth walking tour.
On Saturday, June 11th, Society Trustees and Staff had a gathering with Michael & Kathleen Dowling’s for a toast at their historical home. In 2020 the Society honored Northwell Health President & CEO Michael Dowling because of his commitment and support of the Society and the Northport community. The Society created a permanent historical marker for the home that reads “The James D. and Georgia Cockcroft House, Circa 1896, Builder: George Call.”

Myles Cockcroft, the great-great grandson of James and Georgia Cockcroft, traveled with his girlfriend from Manhattan to join the celebration. He had visited the Society to learn more about his ancestors for the book he is writing. The Dowlings gave a wonderful tour of the house, which was built as a wedding present for the Cockcrofts over one hundred years ago.

David Ambro also attended and wrote an in-depth article for The Observer newspaper. The Society looks forward to implementing a new program that creates historic markers for local landmark homes that are over 100 years old.
