July 2022

Whack Attack Workdays
Thank you to State Parks staff and our volunteers for a successful series of invasive plant removal workdays this spring. We are taking a break for the summer and will resume volunteer workdays this fall. Contact Megan Lynch if you would like to join our Whack Attack team.
Quarterly Bald Eagle Count on July 10th
The public is welcome to help with the next bald eagle count scheduled for July 10th from 7:00 to 8:30 am at Poplar Point beach in the Jordan Lake State Recreation Area. Beginners and experts are welcome. Contact State Parks Ranger Steve McMurray if interested in participating.

Help keep Lower Haw free of litter!
Friends of Lower Haw needs volunteers to empty trash cans we maintain in some of the public access areas. This is a great way to make a difference for the Lower Haw River State Natural Area. We installed trash cans at the upper and lower parking lots of Bynum Mill and near the small parking lot at US 64 access on river left (Apex side). We especially need volunteers for the US 64 location. Volunteers sign up for one month. Sign up to volunteer for trash can duty at this

No Place Like Home
Our bird box monitoring project is winding down for this breeding season. Thanks to Matt Spangler and his team of volunteers who monitor our bird boxes from February through June each year at various locations throughout the Lower Haw River State Natural Area. Volunteer Deb Hanson took these photos of Chickadees from eggs to hatchlings to nestlings to fledglings.
Wild Summers
Dr. Kevin Ricker caught these images of wildlife in summer by the Haw River.

Happy Birthday Friends of Lower Haw!
Friends of Lower Haw turns 6 on July 30th. We received our official approval as a local chapter of the North Carolina Friends of State Parks nonprofit organization on July 30, 2016 and have been growing strong ever since. Read about our accomplishments in our Annual Reports, available on our website Publications page. Thanks to all of our friends for helping us accomplish so much in a relatively few years!
Seeing Red
This July issue's cover photo by Dr. Kevin Ricker is of an American Rubyspot Damselfly. Its jeweled red color is striking. Red is an ancient color used in prehistoric art, ceremonies, and symbolism. It is one of people's top two favorite colors and the most popular color used in flags around the world.
