4th of July clowns
A Minute with Morgan

Fourth of July in Southport has always been special to me. In my life, I’ve only missed being in Southport for two of them. As a little girl I watched the parade from a relative’s lap until I was old enough to watch sitting on the curb, then I graduated to a float rider with members of my summer softball team (the Seagirls). As I grew older I'd return to Southport for the festival from where I was living for a nice three day (at least) vacation to see family and old friends, and for the past few years I’ve found myself covering it for the newspaper. No matter which angle I’ve seen it from, it’s always been a fun time.

And there are so many events this year! If you’re a local resident I hope you get out and enjoy some of them and if you aren’t, please enjoy them through photos we'll post on our website next week and in Wednesday’s edition.

Before I go, if you have pets who are scared of loud noises, try to keep them calm. Woody, the Golden Retriever who writes the Woody’s World column in the weekly paper, put some tips on what to do to make your pet feel safer during fireworks in this week’s edition so check them out - and I hope all of you - on two legs and four - have a very safe and Happy Fourth of July!

An Ethical Excursion in Southport

In this edition of The State Port Pilot GOOD NEWSLETTER, we meet up with Liz Fuller of the Southport Historical Society and a group of very special guests as they embark on an "Ethical Excursion" in Southport.

Meet Chaplain Peter Adams (CPT, US Army) from the 98th Civil Affairs Battalion Special Operations, Airborne, in Fort Bragg, NC to learn what an "Ethical Excursion" is, and how this program benefits military personnel.

As Liz hosts a tour of significant Southport locations, she shares the stories of how the military has been woven into the fabric of the community through history.

An Ethical Excursion in Southport
  • It's the simple things. Tamara Ferguson wrote in to tell us how a simple gesture really makes a difference.

As Tamara drives down Jabbertown Road, she looks forward to seeing a gentleman who faithfully waves to passersby from his porch as they go about their day. She wants to send a big "thank you" to this man whose small kindness is making a positive impact on others.

  • Is there a disconnect? This short Starbucks® Coffee “Break-away” film (4:05) was the product of a recent campaign about reconnecting and being truly present with those that matter to you. Be sure to grab a tissue before you watch this unexpected and touching video. https://coffeebreak-away.com/over

  • July 4th - SMILE! You’re on stateportpilot.com! Watch for our float in the NC 4th of July parade and be sure to smile and wave! We’ll be taking pictures of spectators along the parade route from our float and then posting them on our website! Come and check out the Photo & Video Gallery to find your smiling face!

  • July 7th is National Stay out of the Sun Day. With all of the outdoor festivities coming up you may not stay out of the sun this weekend, so slather on that sunscreen and stay hydrated!
