It's time to celebrate NAIDOC Week!

NAIDOC Week (3-10 July) is an opportunity for all Australians to learn about First Nations cultures and histories and participate in celebrations of the oldest, continuous living cultures on earth. The theme this year is 'Get up! Stand up! Show up!'

Celebrations for this year's NAIDOC Week are well underway in Kingston. NAIDOC Week was officially launched for the year, with a Dinner Dance at the Kingston City Hall, proudly sponsored by Kingston Council. And on Monday 4 July, a flag-raising was held at the Derrimut Weelam Gathering Place.

Kingston Libraries will be running NAIDOC themed storytimes and all-ages indigenous craft workshops. Keep an eye on their Facebook for the latest NAIDOC week reading list. Visit your local library or call 1300 135 668 to find out more.

Respect Older People - call it out

Respect Victoria has launched a new video featuring Helen and grandson Ollie to raise awareness about elder abuse and all forms of violence against women. Up to 14 per cent of older people in Australia experience elder abuse, with older women more likely to be victims. Elder abuse can include financial, physical, sexual, psychological and emotional abuse and neglect. It is most often perpetrated by adult children or relatives of older people. We all deserve to be treated equally, regardless of age or gender. We can all work together to create a more connected, caring and equal society. Victorian Senior of the Year - nominations now open!

Do you know an older Victorian making a difference in our community? This could be a leader who inspires others, a behind-the-scenes organiser or a person who does the hands-on work to deliver services. The Victorian Senior of the Year Awards recognise the volunteer work and community contributions of older Victorians.

Nominations are open until Friday 29 July for the 2022 Victorian Senior of the Year Awards. You can download a nomination form and read about previous award recipients on the Seniors Online website. All nominees will receive a certificate recognising their community contributions.

Thinking about volunteering, but don’t know where to start? Meet with some amazing community organisations and find out how your existing skills can help support your local community. Featuring guest speaker Scott Miller CEO of Volunteering Victoria and 19 local volunteer organisations, you will be sure to discover the right opportunity for you.

The expo will be on Monday 8 August, 2:30pm - 4:30pm at Kingston Art Centre, 979 Nepean Highway, Moorabbin.

Kingston Interfaith bus tour - save the date

On Monday 10 October 2022, Kingston Interfaith Network Committee will host its annual bus tour to places of worship to provide an opportunity for the public to learn about different faiths. We will have two community buses to accommodate 30 people.

As every year, tour participants will be able to see 3-4 different places of worship and ask questions in a respectful and supportive small group environment. This is a great opportunity for the community to be involved in a small guided tour, ask questions, and experience different faiths in a welcoming environment.
