Cobra's Weekly Round Up

Football & Netball
Round 12

this week.
BYE all teams

We travel to Phillip Island on the 9th July,  which is the scene of many epic contests between us. Phillip Island have been the benchmark of the competition for a few years and have many champion players in their side. With our young, talented and ambitious team we are hoping it will be another great contest in all grades.

If round two was to go by with our previous encounter with Bunyip we knew we were in for a big day at the dome. We started off well in a low scoring first quarter. We started to gain ascendancy in our Key Performance Indicators but couldn’t capitalise on the scoreboard before the halftime siren. The 3rd quarter was a real arm wrestle. It was a quarter that had a few momentum swings. Credit to Bunyip matching our boys in the contest. The last quarter was red hot but we knew what needed to be done to get the win at the end.

Our better players for the day were Heath Briggs through the middle who drove the ball forward on many occasions and is always up for the contest. Billy Thomas was outstanding in the ruck all day. Rylan Smith’s defensive work was a great four quarter performance. Cory Machaya was great through the flanks and in the middle of the ground. Max McDermott in his first senior game of football made the most of his moments up forward kicking 2 clutch fourth quarter goals.
It was great to see some of our past players and coaches at the game and in the rooms singing the team song after the game.

On another great day for football we welcomed bunyip to the Cobra Dome .

In what shaped as a good contest with both teams in similar ladder positions Bunyip kicked with the breeze and held the lead at quarter time. In the second quarter Cora Lynn started to hit the scoreboard and lead by out back six who were fantastic all day we went in with lead at half time.

Luke Forman continued his great form in the third and finished the day with 4 goals as we continued to build our lead. We ended up with a nice win heading into the bye and with a bit of momentum. We have needed players to step up all year due to illness and injury and they have all stood up which is fantastic.

Our best players included Tristan Lilley-Hale, in the mid field. Josh Wilson, and Tory Drew in defence.  Sean Wilson, Duoth Jock, and Lado Alphonse all contributed in a positive way throughout the four quarters.

thirds.

When you come up against a side like Bunyip, you always know you are going to have to work hard for it and earn every goal.

Before the game we spoke about getting away to a good start and getting the ball in our territory and make them chase us and not the other way around.

We have been building our chemistry together and we still have plenty to work on, but once the game got underway, it was great to see these young men start to execute things that we have been working on. We were able to put pressure on them and start to hit the scoreboard early, we had plenty of the ball throughout the game and had way more opportunities around goals than they did. We were also able to stop & rebound many of their forward thrusts through the match and keep them scoreless for the 1st half.
Our shots on goal are probably where we need to improve, with us kicking way too many points compared to goals.

It was a very strong effort across the whole field, with everyone contributing to the success of the win. Some standout efforts on the day were Lochlan Clarke at centre half back, he repelled many of Bunyips forward attempts, Ryley Potter across the wings and up forward kicking 2 goals, Jackson McNeil was tremendous with his attack on the footy down back, Kade Perkins was a live spark up forward with 4 goals, Tom Exposito ran & worked very hard through the midfield and Owen Hartley gave plenty of attacking run off the half back line.
