Dairy processors seize initiative on sustainability
Sustainability has been a focal point for the dairy industry since 2012 when the Australian Dairy Sustainability Framework was created. Farmers and processors, many already aware or acting on sustainability, embraced the framework. Over time, the framework has evolved – and so too have our dairy manufacturers.
Many dairy manufacturers have used the industry sustainability framework to develop their own sustainability commitments, becoming much more targeted with their goals and transition plans. Their sustainability reports and digital updates demonstrate their progress on food safety, greenhouse gas emissions, packaging, animal welfare and more.
Australian dairy manufacturers also work together pre-competitively on projects to reduce their environmental impact through the Dairy Manufacturers Sustainability Council (DMSC).They measure and submit environmental data for reporting and benchmarking, with the 2021 Environmental Scorecard due to be published shortly. Their data is representative of 84 per cent of Australia’s processed milk.
