Amazing Agapanthus

Agapanthus flowers, in their hues of blue, purple and white, are starting to pop here at Riverside! If you’ve not grown Agapanthus (aka ‘African Lily’) before, they are great plants to have a go at. They are easy to grow and are as happy in a pot as they are in a border. In fact, they are one of those plants that seems to thrive on a little neglect - they can tolerate drought, don’t mind getting congested and are resilient against most pests and diseases. One thing they do need to flower well is lots of sun, so this isn’t one for a shady corner.

Agapanthus can be bought and grown from a rhizome (which is a bit like a bulb), but you will generally find a much wider range of varieties available as potted plants. Different ones have flowering times of mid-summer through to early autumn, so by choosing a few varieties you can keep the colour coming for months! Plus, they are perennial so will come back year after year.

Dahlias, darling?

Another source of bold colour around the garden centre right now are the Dahlias. These plants come in a range of sizes, from compact bedding types through to statuesque varieties that can grow to 1.5 metres or more. They come in a rainbow of flower colours and the shapes are wonderfully varied too - some are softly rounded, others energetically spiky, some have flat, open forms and others appear as tight, rounded pompoms.

Dahlias are one of the best plants to grow for a long season of spectacular cut flowers. With sunshine, deadheading and a bit of support (for the taller varieties) they will keep blooming right up until the frosts.

Around the world in 80 plants

Travel around the world of plants Phileas Fogg style in our latest houseplant display, focusing on a different region each month from now until autumn. There will be an opportunity to learn alternative vernacular names, along with other surprising or interesting facts about the plants. Our journey will start in the rainforests of Central and South America, where many of our most popular plants are found in the wild.

We want to gather our customers' knowledge as well, so we invite you to write any interesting anecdotes, facts or alternative names you may know for these plants and share them in the display.

And we are hoping to get some exciting guest speakers in - keep an eye on our social media for updates!
