June offers an opportunity to relax and reset in preparation for the next academic year. In many places, this month has also become an opportunity to highlight diversity, equity, and inclusion (DEI) efforts in various organizations, including schools.

CIS of Mid-America Wins $25,000 State Farm Neighborhood Assist® Grant
In just ten days this spring, 88,000 people cast more than 2 million votes in support of their favorite causes. As a result, 100 programs, in 34 states, including Communities In Schools (CIS) of Mid-America, will be getting an assist from State Farm®. Funding from this grant will go to support students that CIS of Mid-America is serving in Kansas City.

JAMAL'S STORY
Jamal* is incredibly kind and humble. He started working with Communities In Schools of Mid-America his junior year of high school and at that time, his situation seemed hopeless. Jamal didn't know what to do until a Student Support Coordinator stepped in to help.

IN SCHOOLS AND BEYOND
  • The Student Support Coordinator at the Junior and Senior High School in Marysville, KS, helped bring a poverty simulator to staff members in the district.
  • With many social events canceled because of the pandemic, Student Support Coordinator Mike Williams in Topeka, KS, created an “Ebony Ball” for over 150 students at 6 different high schools.
  • CIS Student Support Coordinator Cherica Eckiwaudah in Anadarko, OK, secured donations of 8 bicycles from Modern Tribal Nations for winners of her attendance challenge.
  • Katie McClave, Student Support Coordinator at Guadalupe Centers High School in Kansas City, MO, recognized student winners of the Royals Honors Program, and each student was given 2 tickets to a Royals baseball game!
  • Students at Prairie Park Elementary School in Lawrence, KS, earn BobCat Bucks for meeting and exceeding school expectations. Redeemable at the Roar Superstore, which has games, toys, and other items for the kids.
  • Student Support Coordinators in Chanute, KS, provided a resource fair, free garage sale, and dinner for students and families,
  • Boys and girls lunch groups at the Middle School in Ottawa, KS, help students to work on self-awareness, communication skills, and develop positive relationships.
8TH ANNUAL GOLF TOURNAMENT FUNDRAISER IS A HOLE-IN-ONE!
A resounding "thank you" to the participants, sponsors, and volunteers of our 8th annual golf tournament fundraiser held June 24th in Pittsburg, KS. Eleven teams joined together to play in support of our programs. We look forward to seeing all of you again next year!
