Oil exploration: Environment and ocean protection come first, says Seychelles' President

Seychelles' President Wavel Ramkalawan told the press that the country is for the time being only encouraging oil exploration but protection of the environment and ocean remains key to the island nation. In 2012, the US Geological Survey (USGS) concluded an oil survey of the western Indian Ocean region including Seychelles, Tanzania, Madagascar and Mozambique. A total of 793 MMbls (millions of barrels) has been estimated to be present in the rift area of Seychelles, an archipelago in the western Indian Ocean.

Kenya Launches Her First National Marine Litter Management Action Plan
 
Marine Litter is a global challenge that requires global cooperation by Countries, corporations, and other working together to advance a circular economy approach that will reduce the environmental effects of marine litter and recover the lost economic value of such litter. These concerns lead to Kenya develop a 10 year National Marine Litter Management Action Plan (NMLMAP 2021-2030) to address the various challenges and impacts of Marine Liter to the environment.

Towards a Sustainable Blue Economy in the Western Indian Ocean

Over 60 million people rely on the Western Indian Ocean’s resources. However, population growth, increasing exploitation of ocean resources, pollution and a range of unsustainable economic activities are threatening these ecosystem goods and services. Effective ocean governance by the countries sharing these resources is therefore vital. The WIOGI project aims to strengthen cooperation amongst relevant actors at the regional and local levels for the protection and sustainable use of marine and coastal biodiversity in the WIO region.

Our Blue Future

Our Blue Future is a multi-stakeholder initiative for an inclusive and sustainable blue economy in the Western Indian Ocean region. is one of the key initiatives under the wider BMZ-funded Western Indian Ocean Governance Initiative (WIOGI), a partnership between the Nairobi Convention and GIZ. It will strengthen participation in the regional policy dialogue of ocean governance by creating a platform to center the voices of the local WIO private sector and its communities, improving collective responsibility and joint accountability.

Plastics, like diamonds, last forever

Every minute the equivalent of a garbage truck of plastic is dumped into the ocean, and 83 per cent of tap water and 90 per cent of bottled water has been found to contain plastic. In 2020, plastic was detected in human placentas.
Even when plastics have decomposed they present environmental hazards as microplastics and nano plastics remain and get into our ecosystems and food supplies.

Job Opportunity - SAPPHIRE Project Programme Assistant

The Nairobi Convention is seeking a national UNV who will provide technical support in the implementation of the Western Indian Ocean Large Marine Ecosystems Strategic Action Programme Policy Harmonisation and Institutional Reforms (WIO LME SAPPHIRE) project in the Nairobi Convention area, in synergy with related projects of the Nairobi Convention.

Fostering multi-stakeholder partnerships and regional cooperation for SDG14 – Official side event at the UN Ocean Conference, Lisbon

Multi-stakeholder partnerships and regional ocean governance are cornerstones for the conservation and sustainable use of the ocean. Regional cooperation is in a unique position to facilitate connection between global policy commitments to national and local implementation. This side event will highlight successful examples of regional cooperation, such as collaborative MPAs. It will provide a forum to share lessons learned from different marine regions, showcase solutions and explore challenges and opportunities faced in implementing SDG 14. Conclusions from the side event will inform discussions on regional ocean action at the UN Ocean Conference.

Tanzania’s National Environmental Master Plan for Strategic Interventions (2022 – 2032)

Tanzania’s economy is largely dependent on natural resources including forest, water, marine and freshwater bodies, wetlands, wildlife, land, natural gas and minerals. However, unsustainable utilization driven by over-dependence on natural resources has increased pressure on these resources resulting into environmental degradation. The Master plan proposes goals, and expected results, interventions and associated targets in each environmental challenge.
