Oil exploration: Environment and ocean protection come first, says Seychelles' President
Seychelles' President Wavel Ramkalawan told the press that the country is for the time being only encouraging oil exploration but protection of the environment and ocean remains key to the island nation. In 2012, the US Geological Survey (USGS) concluded an oil survey of the western Indian Ocean region including Seychelles, Tanzania, Madagascar and Mozambique. A total of 793 MMbls (millions of barrels) has been estimated to be present in the rift area of Seychelles, an archipelago in the western Indian Ocean.

Towards a Sustainable Blue Economy in the Western Indian Ocean
Over 60 million people rely on the Western Indian Ocean’s resources. However, population growth, increasing exploitation of ocean resources, pollution and a range of unsustainable economic activities are threatening these ecosystem goods and services. Effective ocean governance by the countries sharing these resources is therefore vital. The WIOGI project aims to strengthen cooperation amongst relevant actors at the regional and local levels for the protection and sustainable use of marine and coastal biodiversity in the WIO region.

Our Blue Future
Our Blue Future is a multi-stakeholder initiative for an inclusive and sustainable blue economy in the Western Indian Ocean region. is one of the key initiatives under the wider BMZ-funded Western Indian Ocean Governance Initiative (WIOGI), a partnership between the Nairobi Convention and GIZ. It will strengthen participation in the regional policy dialogue of ocean governance by creating a platform to center the voices of the local WIO private sector and its communities, improving collective responsibility and joint accountability.

Plastics, like diamonds, last forever
Every minute the equivalent of a garbage truck of plastic is dumped into the ocean, and 83 per cent of tap water and 90 per cent of bottled water has been found to contain plastic. In 2020, plastic was detected in human placentas.
Even when plastics have decomposed they present environmental hazards as microplastics and nano plastics remain and get into our ecosystems and food supplies.

Fostering multi-stakeholder partnerships and regional cooperation for SDG14 – Official side event at the UN Ocean Conference, Lisbon
Multi-stakeholder partnerships and regional ocean governance are cornerstones for the conservation and sustainable use of the ocean. Regional cooperation is in a unique position to facilitate connection between global policy commitments to national and local implementation. This side event will highlight successful examples of regional cooperation, such as collaborative MPAs. It will provide a forum to share lessons learned from different marine regions, showcase solutions and explore challenges and opportunities faced in implementing SDG 14. Conclusions from the side event will inform discussions on regional ocean action at the UN Ocean Conference.
