Rham's Captain's Log

Day 700 finds things pretty well in order over here on this side. What side? Who knows. But aside from an old friend inviting me to a 4th of July party with “there’s going to be lots of free beer- I know you’ll like that” as I was having a conversation with my pastor the other morning at the Bakery, I was just excited to be able to grasp my “7/31/20 necklace” and let him know he was 697 days too late for that kind of talk. What did he think? I was going to all of the sudden party again like it was 2020? Let’s not get ahead of ourselves. But, for not really counting the actual days as much anymore (as I opened this week’s log indicating we’re dancing with 700 days today 🙄… okay fine, I still count some. Can’t help it.) Actually, I have this handy dandy “sober” app that does it for me; gives me daily reminders, affirmations, reasons not to drink, and suggestions and recommendations on how to do that. I don’t pay much attention to that part anymore because at this point, I pretty well got a system down that works, or, is working  … well, has worked for the last 700 days at least, so I figure I’ll give it another 600-700 days before I try and conjure up anything better than the conversations I’m already having with myself on the daily on reasons why I’m not drinking today. Granted, these conversations get better with age. You should have talked to me at 20. Ha! Sh*t show if I were to guess. I sure as heck don’t remember…most…thank God. I think. No, that’s accurate. Thank God. He’s sort of a key component with my journey, maybe not yours and that’s okay too. To each his own, they say, but I’ve never quite figured out who “they” are but sometimes “they” ain’t got the best advice and sometimes you might need to just block “they” out, focus on “me” (me being you, wait, not me AS you.. you as you…you get it) and let “you” drive the ship. And by drive the ship I really mean riding shotgun with the sea captain, or at least something bigger and better than you. Bigger in all the ways, not just overall girth. That can get tricky, what with all the convictions and what-not, but just stay the course, should that course be leadin’ ya right, and if not, jump off that course, level down, and re-start. Level-up if you want, but I do not recommend doing that kind of move more than 3 times in a 700 day period. Just trust me on that. Works, but dang. Management of that mental property should have a HOA like they do in neighborhoods, cuz really, it is a neighborhood up there, and well, rules need apply. Restrictions on the regular. Not valid in all states and absolutely void where prohibited. 😳

Be safe out there this weekend with your twiddle-diddle sparklies, boom pops, pows and wows, flames, and fiery torches …. It’s a war zone out there, folks. But, it’s a long weekend and that’s makes things alright in my book. Speaking of books, I’m writing one. Actually already did, and as soon as I find where I put the dern thing imma throw it atcha. Until then, if you love Fort Smith, Love Fort Smith Out Loud!

Happy 4th! Now, go forth!
