Summer Kickoff Recap

The summer season was launched in grand style at our 2022 Summer Kickoff on June 23rd at the Lakeview Inn Bed & Breakfast. Afternoon showers cleared and ushered in a warm summer evening with a soft breeze.

Over 100 members and new watershed friends gathered and partook of beverages and delicious hors d'oeuvres provided by Morrissey's while enjoying the spectacular view of Lake Wentworth. It was wonderful to reconnect with old friends and to meet new ones.

We are all grateful to the Dewitt family for hosting us at their amazing venue. The Dewitt’s purchased the Lake View Inn in 2020 and have been updating since then. The entire family helped plan and host the event, they thought of everything including setting up and breaking down all of the tables, linens, antique couches, flowers, and yard games on the lawn.

If you need a venue for a wedding or other celebration, you won't find a more perfect spot of hospitable hosts. Give Marie a call set up a site and room tour.
Summer Lake  Reminders

Keep Your Distance from Loons
Based on recent observations, the loon population of Lake Wentworth is stable. There have been reports of nests in Brewster Heath and on Brummitt Island. To help our nesting loons be successful this year, please do not approach loons, especially when nesting or when you see chicks.

Festive Without the Fireworks
This is a friendly reminder that consumer fireworks are illegal in the town of Wolfeboro. Fireworks fired off over the lake rain down litter, as well as contribute to phosphorus loading of the lakes. Fireworks can be distressing to people with PTSD, pets, and wildlife.

Stamp Act Island
North Beach on Stamp Act Island will be open to the public on July 1st. The rest of the island is closed to the public as a nature preserve. Please remember that dogs are never permitted on the island.
July 3rd Festivities

Boat Parade -  3pm

Celebrate the 4th of July on the lake with your fellow boaters. Decorate your craft and yourselves to your hearts desire in red, white, and blue to head out for a turn about the lake. Be sure to take a pic of your boat and crew to enter the decoration contest. Winners get bragging rights and their picture in the next Zephyr. Here are last years winner's Chris Hyldburg and family with their Eagle Mast head  for inspiration!

If the weather looks iffy check the Watershed Facebook page to see if the parade will be moved to the rain date on July 4th. The exact route will be determined based on weather and how fast the parade proceeds. Canoers, kayakers, and paddleboarders are welcome to participate and boats may join or leave as they wish.

For more info check the Events Page on our site

Light up the Watershed - 9:30-11 PM

At 9:30 place a battery-powered red light or LED flare at the end of your dock or other visible spot in the watershed. Many inexpensive LED flares are available online. Please protect our water quality and refrain from lighting the old pyrotechnic road flares which pollute the lake and contribute to phosphorus loading.
Ben Baldwin Fishing Derby

Get out your fishing rod and your lead-free tackle and head out on our lakes to fish on Saturday, July 2nd from 9-1. The Baldwin family is hosting this family event for Wentworth Watershed Association members and their guests.

This year's derby will be a hybrid of both live and photo submissions. Again, the fish will be judged by length rather than by weight. Bring the longest fish of each species you've caught (kept alive and in water) to the Baldwin dock on Cate Island (opposite the sandbar of Stamp Act) to be measured (and also weighed if you desire). Look for the red, white, and blue fish windsock on their dock! If you are unable to get out to Cate Island, you may submit a picture of your longest fish, held up against a ruler so that its length is clearly visible. Please only submit pictures of fish caught between 9 and 1 on 7/3 on Facebook or email them to executivedirector@wentworthwatershed.org no later than midnight on 7/3.

The Association encourages all participants to be prepared, stay safe, and demonstrate environmental ethics. The emphasis is to have good fishing ethics and to take care of the lakes and the fish by keeping them in water and releasing them back where they were caught. Everyone 16 years or older must have a current NH Fishing License to participate.

In honor of Ben Baldwin's dream to become a Fish & Game Officer, a special award, The Conscientious Fisher Award, will be given in his memory to the person 18 and under who demonstrates the best fishing ethics. To be eligible for the award, submit a video of your fishing and handling techniques. How do you prepare to fish? What do you take with you? What kind of tackle do you use? When you catch a fish, how do you handle it and release it? Have someone take a video (2 minutes max) of you telling us about the safety precautions you take when you head out to fish and how you treat the fish you catch.

Submit your video by uploading it to YouTube and sending us your video link on our Facebook page or emailing a video link to executivedirector@wentworthwatershed.org. All submissions must be received by the end of the day on Sunday, July 3rd to be considered.

Ben loved fishing and the outdoors. He cared deeply for the lake he lived on and all the wildlife that depend on it. In honor of Ben, please take care of our resources to preserve what we have for many years to come. The fisher person with the most thoughtful video displaying their fishing ethics and personal fishing safety will receive a $50 gift card to Dive Winnipesaukee.

Awards will be given at the Annual Meeting to those who have caught the longest fish of each species. All winners will be announced on the Association's website and Facebook page and in the Granite State News.

Happy Fishing!
