FG, ANEEJ Agree on Fast-Tracking 2nd National Anti-Corruption Strategy

On the 21st of June, 2022, ANEEJ held a strategic meeting with the Federal Ministry of Justice to discuss the 2nd National Anti-Corruption Strategy (NACs II), as part of implementing the "Enhancing Anti-Corruption and Social Inclusive Reform Initiatives" project. ANEEJ Executive Director, Rev David Ugolor, led the team that met with the Head of Asset Recovery and Management Unit (ARMU), Mrs. Mohammad Ladidi, represented by the Assistant Chief State Counsel, Bunmi Adelaye to discuss updates on the development of NACS II and possible collaboration between ANEEJ and FG to fast track the process. This is particularly important as the timeframe for the implementation of the first National Anti-corruption Strategy ended in 2021.

ANEEJ Proffers Solution to Poverty in Anambra State

The Africa Network for Environment and Economic Justice, ANEEJ, has called for a state driven social protection policy to address poverty in Anambra State. The call was made at a two-day workshop for Government officials, CSOs, and Journalists, held on Thursday, 23rd June, 2022 in Awka, Anambra State, as part of its Enhancing Social Protection Programmes in Nigeria (ESSPIN) project. The ESSPIN project is funded by Bread for the World, Germany. The workshop was aimed at supporting effort of government in tackling the hydra-headed poverty problem in the State. At the event, a member of Anambra State House of Assembly representing Nnewi North, Hon. Smart Okafor, assured that the legislators would support legislations on social protection with a view to protecting the poor and vulnerable. Read more

Stakeholders Elect SSG, Youth Commissioner to Lead Serious Organised Crime Prevention in Edo, Bayelsa

On the implementation of the Serious and Organised Crime (SOC-Prevent) project being implemented by ANEEJ in partnership with Torchlight group and funded by the UK Home Office, the Crime Prevention Steering Groups (CPSG) in Edo and Bayelsa have elected the Secretary to the Edo State Government, Barr. Osarodion Ogie and Bayelsa State Commissioner for Youth and Sports Development, Hon. Daniel Igali as the leads of the CPSG management in their respective States. The conclusion was reached as a consequence of the two simultaneous meetings with CPSG, which was convened by the Africa Network for Environment and Economic Justice (ANEEJ) in Edo and Bayelsa States, on 30th June, 2022. Present in the meetings were representatives from the Nigeria Police Force, Ministry of Justice, Bayelsa State Ministry of Youth and Sports Development, Edo State Ministry of Youths and Humanitarian Affairs, National Drug and Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA), Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps (NSCDC), Christian Association of Nigeria (CAN), Chief Imam, Benin Central Mosque, Security Networks, and CSOs from Edo and Bayelsa States. The meetings included presentation of the SOC Prevent Handbook to attendees, which provided information on the duties and roles of members of the CPSG. The CPSG members signed the terms of reference for the groups to affirm their ownership of the process as a sustainability strategy.

Local Authorities, Community Reps Agree Alternative Pathways to Serious Organised Crimes in Edo, Bayelsa 
ANEEJ organized two simultaneous meetings with Crime Prevention Partners (CPPs) in each of the project states (Edo and Bayelsa) as part of the Serious and Organized Crime (SOC- Prevent) project. The focus of the project is to prevent Serious Organised Crime by providing alternatives to people who are vulnerable to joining Organized Crime Groups (OCGs). Meetings were held in Ogunmwenyin community, Oredo Local Government Area on Tuesday, 28th of June, 2022 and Utesi community, Ikpoba-Ohka Local Government Area on Thursday, 30th of June, 2022 in Edo State. Simultaneously, two meetings were held in Bayelsa, targeting the Amarata community, Yenegoa Local Government Area on Tuesday, 28th of June, 2022 and Amassoma community in Southern Ijaw Local Government Area on Wednesday, 29th of June, 2022. They were attended by participants from distinct security groups/networks, community leaders and local government council representatives from their respective States. The meetings featured comprehensive presentation of the (SOC) Prevent Handbook, nomination and appointment of the CPP management team in their respective communities, signing of the terms of reference and setting intervention objectives and outcomes.
Edo Commissioner Backs Serious Organised Crime-Prevent Project

On Thursday July 7th, 2022, ANEEJ staff, paid an advocacy visit to the Office of the Honourable Commissioner of Youths and Humanitarian Affairs and met with the Honourable Commissioner, Nehikhare Chris Osa. The purpose of the advocacy visit was to introduce the Serious and Organised Crime (SOC-Prevent) project and provide updates on the project's implementation. The Commissioner praised the project's innovative approach to crime prevention and pledged his support to the implementation of the project.
