Yolanda at the ECE Expo

Auckland teachers- please come and say hi to me if you’re attending the ECE Expo being held at the Trusts Arena on the 6th and 7th of August. It’s free entry. I’m looking forward to seeing what amazing resources will be on display plus meeting other educators at the ECE Expo.

Free download for sound boxes

Sound (Elkonin) boxes are a fun, practical, evidence-based way to help children hear every sound in a word and develop phonemic awareness. I made this resource years ago to use with my own students to prepare them to use sound boxes in their writing. We sound out words with pushing a counter per sound into each box. Once students can do that, they write the letters for the sounds in the boxes.

HELP! Guided readers wanted for my school

I am taking on the responsibility for the guided reading books at my school. It is fair to say our collection is poor and mainly consists of Ready to Reads with very few properly scaffolded guided reading books like the PMs, Oxford Reading Tree, Sunshine and Sails guided readers. As you can see in the picture, our entire guided reading resources fits in 7 plastic tubs on just three small shelves!

There’s no money for new books. I’m wondering, since I know schools do sometimes get rid of old readers, if anyone might be culling titles from the publishers listed above, now or in the future? We are looking for sets of 3 or more books and not the Ready to Reads. We’ll pay P&P and would be so grateful. Please email me if you can help. Thank you.

First Early Literacy Clinic a hit!

I trialed my first Early Literacy Clinic last week to see if teachers would find it helpful to attend a forum discussing early literacy issues and ask questions. It turns out they do! Watch the Q&A section of the clinic.

The response to the clinic was overwhelmingly positive and we will be running another one on Thursday, 25th August at 3:30pm. I’ll talk for a short time on a topic (TBA) and then we’ll move to a Q&A on anything related to early literacy issues. Questions do not have to relate to the topic and can be about anything to do with early literacy.

All are welcome to attend – you don’t have to have a question to come.

YO's CHOCOLATE SELF-SAUCING PUDDING

I’ve been making this pudding for decades. It was one of my favourite puddings when I was a child, and now it is my children’s favourite. It’s a kiwi classic! This yummy chocolate sponge is baked in its own delicious chocolate sauce that is magically created from sprinkling sugar and water on the top of the sponge batter.

To make the sponge batter:
1) Combine the wet ingredients in a small bowl.
2) Sift dry ingredients in a medium sized bowl.
3) Pour in the wet ingredients and combine, stirring to make a thick batter. Don’t over beat.
4) Pour into an ungreased 2 litre baking dish.

To make the chocolate sauce:
1) Mix the brown sugar and cocoa in a small bowl to combine and to remove lumps.
2) Sprinkle mix evenly over the batter.
3) Spoon the boiling water over the batter.

To cook:
1) Bake for 40 minutes or so until the sponge is baked through and the sauce has formed under it in the bottom of the dish.
2) Serve with your choice of soy/coconut ice-cream or, like the Soryl children do, with a splash of So Good Vanilla soy milk.
3) This is also good the next day for breakfast.
