Hello Fam,
So here we are. It's the end of June, and the time has come to say goodbye. As we look back on the last month since we broke the news to you that we'd have to lay low for a while, our hearts could not be more full. We asked, you answered - and our inboxes (all of them!) are overflowing with what Kubatana means to you. We now know what kind of a gap we will leave, and we also know without a shadow of a doubt that our work matters - to all of you. Thank you for taking the time to show up for us.
This is our last newsletter until further notice.
We're continuing to have important conversations behind the scenes, and to take some time to reflect, restrategize, and figure out what's next. We don't have all the answers, but you can be sure that once we know what our beloved Kubatana will do next, you will be the first to know.

when they rest you [today], perhaps your beloved Gandamasungo will sigh all your names in farewell. perhaps, the skies above it will darken from ancient Zimbabwean birds, resplendent in dresses of grief. perhaps the ongoing struggle for independence will bend its head and feel its soul sink once more. perhaps we will say, yet again, in our heads, the things we would have said when we could still say them. And perhaps, some day soon, we will all know to raise those heads and read between the lines of this wretched last act that which your brave, selfless, rare, true, tireless heart that so loved Zimbabwe, that so loved us, knew and lived by till the final heartbeat . . . for when we do, is when we, too, will sing your song, and we will sing it so loud you will hear us and know the better, the democratic Zimbabwe you believed in but did not live to see, would have come at last -- we would have found, in your song, a power greater than the people in power. it is time to say go well Mukoma Alex Tawanda Magaisa, and also to say, thank you. Friends for life . . .
Kubatana has become that one best friend who’s been away for a few days, you are so eager to meet. That one friend you can’t even wait to tell that I love and missed you, you forget about everything and everyone around you but concentrate and give the whole attention to it so that you won’t miss any detail. That has become Kubatana for me. I haven’t got my job yet, but that’s not why I love Kubatana. It made me discover that we have so much talent not just country wide but Africa wide. If it’s not reminding us to go and register to vote, it’s keeping us updated on news that is happening in our country. I’m going to miss Kubatana. If I could I would sponsor you so that people like me and others will have home and dream again to have our jobs. I’m praying to God that you’ll get your sponsor anytime soon. God bless you.

Are you in contact with your families?
We contact them everyday; we have not lost contact with families.
To the married guys - how are you ensuring that your marriages stay alive?
We assure our wives that we hard at work so that we can support them. They are secure and are not worried as we talk to them on a daily basis.
What does the name Mokoomba mean?
Mokoomba means the vibrant life that the Zambezi River gives to the baTonga people and their culture.
How did you come together to form the band
We stay in the same hood, so we knew each other before we started the band so it was easy for us to come together and form a group. When we heard about the Zimbabwe Crossroads we decided to go as a team.
What was your prize?
The prize was a European tour.
As bread winners in Zimbabwe how has life been for you?
Its very difficult coz there is no money; we just do the shows because we want to build a name.
Do you as males get preference as opposed to female artists?
I don't think it has anything to do with male or female. If you are playing something nice music people will like your music. It is about what you give the people.
What genre is your music?
Afro fusion of Tonga music that has a Zambian groove mixing it with a Zimbabwean feel and a bit of a Spanish feel.
What is the theme of your music?
We sing about HIV and AIDS. Most of our music is about teaching people about diseases.
What is your greatest fear as musicians?
I think the worst that would happen to Mokoomba would be to separate and the other thing is that musicians in Zimbabwe do not have insurance. The government should ensure that the arts people should have insurance so that they can live off their money as a musician even if they can no longer do music.
How often do you perform and where?
At the Book Café in Harare every Tuesday.
How do you handle the pressure of being musicians?
There is no pressure if you know what you are doing. So when you are playing you will not be afraid coz you are playing something that you like, that you sure of, that you believe in and you are good at.
What advice would you give other upcoming artists that want to start a band?
They should have confidence in what they are doing and have confidence about the music that they do. Practice, and listen to other people and then come with your own groove.
What advice would you give the fans?
Things are difficult but in everything you do you must put God first. And whatever you start working on you must finish it and don't give up.
What is the catch factor about Mokoomba?
Mokoomba has a different style. We are trying to show people that there is that part of Zimbabwe that can shine. We want to show that Zimbabwe does not have mbira music only but Tonga music can also be explored and we sing in a lot of languages.
Is it worth it to be in the music industry?
Yes it is. You can't run away from being what you are; you just have to push until it's all right.
What would you change in the music industry given the chance?
The Zim style people want to follow mbira music, Thomas Mapfumo and Oliver Mtukudzi.thats why we are trying to introduce this music so that people don't think that mbira music is the only one in Zimbabwe.
Do you think promoters and producers are doing their jobs?
I think they are not doing their jobs and I think I will put the blame on the government that does not look out for the arts industry. And promoters still push artists that are already established and not upcoming musicians in the country.
Who is who in the band?
Matthias and Trust come up with the basic structure of the songs. The rule is that if one of us comes with an idea the whole band now owns it.
Why where you denied visas to your European tour?
We don't know what happened there because there are people who deal with that. We were delayed; the embassies said it was now too late for the visas to be processed. Partly because we are Zimbabweans, but we are surprised because the group that came second managed to go on their tour.

What's the best piece of advice you've ever received?
It was from my high school English teachers Tasiyana Jabangwe, Manyakaidze and Kudzai Ngara who encouraged me to read, read and read.
What's the most ridiculous thing you've ever done?
Turning up at a cousin's wedding in jeans when everyone was dressed formal. Afterwards I had to buy a suit.
What is your most treasured possession?
My library.
What do you regard as the lowest depth of misery?
When someone you love is in trouble and you can't do anything to help.
Do you have any strange hobbies?
People always find it strange that I can play golf. They say "what are you doing in a sport divorced from the ‘people'?" I am a soccer guy, an Arsenal and Caps United fan who happened to frequent the golf course and learnt to play.
What do you dislike most about your appearance?
I wear specs, they make me look nerdish.
What is your greatest extravagance?
Buying replica shirts of obscure football teams, even from South America, I guess.
What have you got in your fridge?
Water, milk and yoghurt and lots of tomatoes, I have not done much cooking lately. You will almost never find fizzy drinks.
What is your greatest fear?
Being unable to write, perhaps what the literary folks call a writer's block.
What have you got in your pockets right now?
An empty wallet and my house keys.
What is your favourite journey?
It would be this journey of life.
Who are your heroes in real life?
James Baldwin, an American writer for the grace of his prose and the clarity of his vision, the French soccer team, people like Patrick Vieira, Lilian Thuram, Zinedine Zidane, Titi Henry and all those people whose parents arrived on the French shores and worked hard on the docks and elsewhere to be what they are now and people out there, market people, vendors on street corners, Bob Marley and others who try to give a better life to their families and Arsene Wenger, as an Arsenal fan, for what he has done for the club.
When and where were you happiest?
A recent experience would have been in the Drakensberg at the source of the Tukela river, so natural, so tranquil that I slept on a rock as a flood of water ran down from a cliff nearby.
What's your biggest vice?
As I know a bit about European soccer I do the occasional soccer bet and win.
What were you like at school?
At once bookish, fun loving, naughty and sometimes difficult. But when I meet some of my teachers now they like me so I could not have been that naughty.
What are you doing next?
Try to make some films, there are 12 million stories to be told out there.

Thoughts about the closure of Kubatana
I have been reflecting about the news that Kubatana might close after 21 years with a mixture of feelings. The one feeling is some sort of grief, losing an old friend. I was there at the beginning when Bev and Brenda raised the idea and got the funding to start, and I was excited about the creation of civil society information hub. Information was so polarised (and still is), and the notion that a hub that would convey the concerns of civil society from an independent position seemed so necessary (and still is).
The second feeling was anger. Anger that such a valuable resource would not longer be here. I think few really appreciate just what a service Kubatana has (and still) plays in the life of Zimbabwean civil society. From providing a resource on who’s who in the zoo of civil society to providing a platform for organisations wanting staff or needing consultants; from providing information about grants through to having a huge archive of reports on a wide range of civic issues (this must now run to thousands of documents); and keeping the wide community aware of all the current issues of concern. Never mind the newsletter that goes out to over 70,000 followers, and in a beautiful, readable format. Small wonder that Kubatana has received awards.
A wise donor once pointed out to me that it not only what an organisation does with the money that they are granted, it is also what it does voluntarily to add value. Here think about how much money Kubatana has saved organisations (and donors) by having a space to advertise for jobs, for consultants, for grants that might be available, and I bet in 21 years that service has saved hundreds of thousands of dollars that might have had to spent on paying for space in the press!
Think about the archive of reports. Finding reports about Zimbabwe is no small task, as there are literally tens of thousands of reports on the country since 2000 and crisis that has been ongoing. Here I will point out that on organised violence and torture alone there are close to 600 individual reports, and any researcher faces the monumental task of searching the internet for a particular document. Too often you can cut the burden by just going to Kubatana!
And then there is all the news that Kubatana brings to your doorstep. Not just about current issues or politics or human rights, but about art and culture, and particularly about Africa and Africans: poets, writers, artists, musicians and on and on.
Kubatana is a unique window on Zimbabwe and has become an institutional part of civic life. I can’t imagine how this space will be filled and if you think that it should be saved, say something, get AVAAZ to start a petition, but don’t be passive. At least 70,000 people should say something.

The Student Academic Freedom Regional Advocacy Program (SAFRAP) 2.0 Student Situational Analysis Research 2022: Youth Empowerment and Transformation Trust (YETT, Zimbabwe)

A call for Expression of Interest (EOI) is made to consultants who wish to undertake a Student Situational Analysis of higher and tertiary level students in Swaziland, Zambia and Zimbabwe under the Student Academic Freedom Regional Advocacy Program (SAFRAP) 2.0 and facilitated by the Youth Empowerment and Transformation Trust (YETT, Zimbabwe), the Zambian National Education Coalition (ZANEC, Zambia) and The Swaziland Youth Empowerment Organization (Luvatsi, Swaziland). The Analysis broadly aims to capture and establish a Southern African student profile that helps deepen our understanding of this demographic group. The key assumption that this study is based on is that with accurate and current information higher and tertiary education students and stakeholders can create opportunities that are tailored to address their lived experiences and realities.
Objectives of the student situational analysis
The overall objective of the research is to empower higher and tertiary education students and stakeholders to drive change, strengthen student activism, advocacy and oversight at multiple levels, and to empower student led and focused organizations to advance student rights. Specifically, YETT and its SAFRA partners would like to develop a comprehensive understanding of the context in which higher and tertiary students in Zimbabwe, Zambia and Swaziland are thriving and struggling in, including identifying the key issues affecting students, their priorities in life and for the future, and the ways in which they participate in (or do not participate in) the pursuit of quality education. The analysis will provide the opportunity to identify gaps, opportunities and challenges as well as changes in trends and issues upon which current information needs to be collected. The information from the analysis will enable YETT and its partners to better plan, implement, monitor and evaluate its student empowerment interventions, including policy advocacy initiatives.
Study methodology
This is a desktop and field based assignment that involves consultation of both secondary and primary data. The fieldwork will involve the collection of primary data from targeted informants in pre-selected areas and Focus Group Discussions (FGDs) and may be carried out virtually. Although analysis will draw information from existing studies, it should have practical issues from students by capturing voices based on lived realities. The fieldwork will involve the collection of primary data in Zimbabwe, Zambia and Swaziland.
Deliverables
Inception report upon hosting of an inception meeting; Student Situational Analysis Framework for carrying out the Student Situational Analysis as defined in the ToRs; Data collection tools; Data collection covering Zimbabwe, Zambia and Swaziland (a data collection plan to be agreed during inception meeting); Student Situational Analysis report, which establishes a comprehensive picture of key issues to student development and pursuit of inclusive, quality and equitable higher education in Zimbabwe, Zambia and Swaziland; The final report should be less than 25 pages with emphasis placed on communicating key findings and recommendations, rather than long presentation of existing literature (a structure to be agreed on during the inception meeting)
Timeline
The Consultancy will run from the 11th of July to the 5th of September 2022.
Consultant technical requirements
YETT requires the effort to be carried out by consultants with the following expertise: Appropriate qualification and proven experience in research; Demonstrated knowledge and experience in quantitative data analysis; Knowledge and experience in using existing and new data to draw up conclusions; An understanding of the higher and tertiary education system and context in Zimbabwe, Zambia and Swaziland respectively

Strengthening the Provision of Child Eye Health Services at Tertiary Eye Units in Zimbabwe: Christian Blind Mission (CBM)

Background of project
Christian Blind Mission (CBM) International in partnership with Zimbabwe Council for the Blind is implementing a project titled “Strengthening the Provision of child eye health services at tertiary eye units in Zimbabwe”. The project sought to complement ongoing eye health projects and to strengthen the provision of child eye health services at the two tertiary eye units in Zimbabwe that are Sekuru Kaguvi Eye Unit at Parirenyatwa Group of Hospitals and Richard Morris at United Bulawayo Group of Hospitals. The support will ensure that children with visual impairments are afforded the best services for various eye conditions.
Purpose
The purpose of the evaluation is to establish and document the impact and effectiveness of childhood eye care interventions and to render accountability to the donor. The evaluation is expected to provide data on the relevance, efficiency, effectiveness, coherence and sustainability of project interventions in the two provinces of Bulawayo and Harare.
Scope
The end-of-term evaluation will assess and analyse the overall implementation of the P4015 Strengthening the Provision of child eye health services at tertiary eye units in Zimbabwe project. It will assess if activities were carried out according to the project plan from the project commencement in June 2020 up to June 2022. The end-of-term evaluation shall cover 2 provinces of Zimbabwe that is Harare and Bulawayo. The project evaluation shall focus on Childhood eye care health service delivery, and equipment provision as well as on the capacity-building interventions supported by the project.
Professional experience
The consultant must have: Master’s degree or higher academic degree related to Social Sciences, Clinical Social Work, Public health, economic and social development-related studies, Organisational Development or similar (at least the Team Manager); Proven working experience with NGOs or INGO and the Government sector in the field of public health, disability inclusion or eye health; Proven consultancy experience of at least 5 years with a record of providing high-quality, creative expert advice; Proven experience in the evaluation of projects/programmes by International donors (BMZ, EU, DFAD, DFID, etc.); Experience in evaluation of similar programmes and sound knowledge of Project Cycle Management and evaluation criteria; Experience in participatory approach is a must as well as facilitation skills; Good analytical skills, proven working experience in the field of disability and inclusive development; Knowledge about local culture, policies, and laws to understand the reality for persons with disabilities in Zimbabwe; Working knowledge in Zimbabwe is necessary; Excellent writing skills, ability to write in a structured and concise manner; Proactivity and persistence will be required; Proficiency in written and spoken English and corresponding country language(s) essential; Ideally teams should consist of men and women and should include persons with disabilities

Background of project
The Reformed Church in Zimbabwe (RCZ) and CBM would like to propose a project to the German Federal Ministry of Economic Cooperation and Development (BMZ), which shall contribute toward strengthening the provision of inclusive eye care services to children and young adults in Masvingo Province of Zimbabwe. The project is currently in its design phase and CBM is seeking to recruit a consultant to conduct a feasibility study.
Purpose
The requested consultancy aims to assess the feasibility of a proposed project of CBM and the Reformed Church in Zimbabwe and to systematically check the extent to which the project approach can plausibly achieve the planned objectives under the existing framework conditions.
Scope
The study will determine the feasibility of the proposed project by assessing whether it is well founded and meets the demand identified. The prerequisites, opportunities and risks because of the development and the implementation of the project shall be identified to inform decision-makers. The study is also expected to provide baseline information and give recommendations for the project design to achieve the project results. The feasibility study is expected to provide concrete recommendations for improving the project concept. The study will be submitted to BMZ together with the project proposal.
The feasibility study should consist of four components: Context and problem analysis (4.1.1); Assessment of target groups and other relevant actors (4.1.2); Assessment of the project against the OECD/DAC criteria (4.2); Recommendations (based on findings on the three points above).
Professional experience
The consultant should have the following attributes among others: The team leader should possess at least a Master's degree or higher academic degree in Public health, Social Sciences, economic and social development-related studies, Organisational Development or related field; Proven working experience with NGOs or INGO and the Government sector in the field of public health, disability inclusion or eye health; Proven consultancy experience of at least 5 years with a record of providing high quality, creative expert advice, provide a sample of previous similar work; Proven experience in conducting feasibility studies of projects/programmes by International Donors (BMZ, EU, DFAD, DFID, etc.); Experience in conducting feasibility studies of similar projects and sound knowledge of the Project Cycle Management; Experience in participatory approach is a must as well as facilitation skills; Track record in designing and conducting quantitative and qualitative studies; Experience in undertaking research with remote and marginalized communities; Good analytical skills, proven working experience in the field of disability and inclusive development; Knowledge about local culture, policies, and laws to understand the reality for persons with disabilities in Zimbabwe; Working knowledge in Zimbabwe is necessary; Excellent writing skills, ability to write in a structured and concise manner; Proactivity and persistence will be required; Proficiency in written and spoken English and the local language is essential; Ideally, teams should consist of men and women and should include persons with disabilities.

The role
The laboratory technician is the technical lead for the laboratory services within PSZ. The incumbent will oversee all the operations of the clinical laboratory while being the lead in performing the various laboratory test. S/he will be responsible for internal and quality assurance of the various laboratory tests offered. The Laboratory Technician will be responsible for client data privacy. Moreover, s/he will be required to input the strategic business planning for the unit as the technical lead. The role also involves analysis of data over time including generating income vs. costs reports and analyses and developing recommendations as appropriate.
Key responsibilities
The incumbent will be responsible for the following among other duties: Oversees the day-to-day operations of the clinical laboratory; Collects client specimens which include blood, non-blood specimens and performs specialized procedures at point of contact with patients as and when necessary; Registers client information in the Laboratory Information System (LIS) as needed; Performs and documents daily equipment function by checking and calibrating to ensure that it is operating efficiently and providing accurate results, ensuring that all equipment meets safety standards; Runs prescribed routine and high complexity assays on manual and on automated platforms in line with Standard Operating Procedures and adhering to quality control to include IQC and proficiency testing; Monitors test quality, accuracy, timely testing and release of results through tracking turnaround times, pending tests and updating daily work; Validates test results through correlation with test parameters (e.g. Hb/HCT, anion gap, etc.), to ensure accuracy and determine reasonableness of results prior to reporting of test results; Reports test results via phone or electronic mail to ensure timeous dispatch of data required by health and medical professionals; Participates in external quality assurance programs by conforming internal testing processes and quality against other laboratories; Assures that the department has adequate supply of testing materials by placing orders on time and ensuring cost-effective utilisation; Communicating with supervisory clinical director and team leaders regarding laboratory services; Implementing new programs, testing procedures, methodologies, and laboratory equipment; Growing laboratory business operations through marketing of services and finding clients; Managing other clinical laboratory staff as appropriate
About you
To succeed in this role, you must have: Diploma in Medical Laboratory Sciences; Valid practicing certificate with Medical Laboratory and Clinical Scientists Council of Zimbabwe; At least five years working experience and as lead laboratory technician; Ability to work with wide variety of modern laboratory equipment; Experience in all departments of Laboratory services; Excellent skills in MS-Word and excel; Excellent communication skills written and oral communication including report writing; Good data analytics and customer care skills; Short courses (in-class or online) in public health focusing on SRHR an added advantage; Excellent business acumen and marketing skills.

Duties
