Everything Kāpiti

Ngā Pitopito kōrero mai i te Kaunihera o Kāpiti

Kia ora Kāpiti

We had a great time at Matariki Ramaroa at Maclean Park on Friday night – if you missed it, remember there's other events over the next few weeks, and a closing light show at Ōtaki Beach on 15/16 July. See https://matariki.maorilandfilm.co.nz/ for more details; we're proud supporters of this event through our Major Events Fund – read on to find out more!

Having your say is a cornerstone of Aotearoa New Zealand's democracy, which is why we're encouraging you to get involved; this week we encourage you to enrol for the upcoming local elections in October, and have your say on the Government's Water Services Entity Bill. We're also keen to hear your ideas on coastal hazards.

Our local democracy is made stronger by our community members sharing their ideas. Please make sure you have your say.

Mā te wā – have a great week.

Have your say on the future of our three waters

Public submissions are now being accepted by the Select Committee for the Water Services Entity Bill. If passed, the Bill will enable the Government to establish four water services entities to deliver drinking water, wastewater, and stormwater services across Aotearoa New Zealand from July 2024.

With more than $579 million of three waters assets set to be transferred to Water Services Entity C under the Three Waters Reform. This is a big deal for Kāpiti and we encourage you to get informed and have your say on the Water Services Entity Bill before submissions close on 22 July 2022.

If you missed our journey through the three waters in Kāpiti, you can check it out at Deep dive into our water on our website.

Join our Matariki planting days

New life is a strong theme for this time of year, as Matariki rises in the eastern sky.
Our Biodiversity team are helping native trees begin their journey of life by supporting Matariki Ramaroa – Kāpiti Lights Festival with two tree-planting sessions.

Everyone’s invited to join:
  • 10am–12pm, Monday 4 July
Planting with Waitohu Stream and Dune Care Group, meet at the north end of Moana Street, Ōtaki Beach.
  • 10am–12pm, Tuesday 5 July
Planting with Ngā Uruora Kāpiti Project, meet at the base of the Escarpment Track, Paekākāriki.

Tell us your ideas for responding to coastal hazards

Climate change means we can expect more frequent and extreme storms, along with sea-level rise, causing increasing erosion and inundation along our coast.
How should our our community respond and adapt to this? The Takutai Kāpiti Coastal Advisory Panel want to hear what you think.

Pop along to the Paekākāriki Market on Saturday 2 July or the Te Horo Country Market on Sunday 3 July to talk to some of our Takutai Kāpiti Coastal Advisory Panel members.

Kāpiti Coast to head to the polls in October

Our community will shortly have the opportunity to have their say on who will govern the Kāpiti Coast District for the next three years. Candidate nominations open on 15 July, and enrolled voters will be able to cast their vote from 16 September to 8 October.

This month, Council appointed Dale Ofsoske to the role of Electoral Officer, responsible for all matters relating to the delivery of the election in the district.

Eligible voters will vote in a mayor, 10 councillors and 20 community board members using the single transferable vote (STV) electoral system.

Following a representation review in 2021, a fifth community board representing Raumati was added, so for the new triennium there will be separate community boards for Ōtaki, Waikanae, Paraparaumu, Raumati and Paekākāriki. The four wards (Ōtaki, Waikanae, Paraparaumu and Paekākāriki-Raumati) have not changed, except for adjustments to some ward boundaries, which mainly affect the Te Horo and Raumati communities. There is also a change to the ratio of ward-based to district-wide councillors, from 5:5 to 7:3.

Your vote counts, so if you haven’t voted before, make sure you’re ready to have your say by enrolling now.

Call centre under the pump

With the recent wild weather and plenty going on around the district, our Customer Engagement team is managing an increasingly high volume of customer enquires.
Over 4,400 calls, emails, and Antenno reports have been lodged with us this month – nearly 1000 more than what we received for the whole month of April!

Like the rest of Kāpiti, we’re also juggling significant staff shortages due to illness. With this in mind, please remember to be patient and kind to our lovely staff during this busy time. We're all working hard to support our community.

If your call is about a non-urgent issue you can report these via email, our website or Antenno.

Major event fund backs unique terrain, culture and kai

Seven events leveraging the Kāpiti Coast’s unique terrain and strengths in culture, creativity and kai will receive support through our Major Event Fund 2022.
The Major Events Fund, a key tool supporting our Kāpiti Coast Destination Management Plan, backs events that attract visitors, stimulate tourism and contribute to the long-term local economy.  This year there was $200,000 in funding available to support the delivery of major events.

The Kāpiti Food Fair, Kāpiti Half – Oma te Takutai, Māoriland Film Festival, Kāpiti Women’s Triathlon, Ōtaki Kite Festival, XTERRA Wellington and Matariki Ramaroa have all been awarded funding.

Hosting major events is a win-win for our district – not only are they great for our community connectivity and wellbeing, they also attract visitors, generating spending at local hospitality, retail and accommodation businesses.

Waikanae River Trail open, work on track surface continues

After a week of hard mahi by Council staff, contractors and our friends at Greater Wellington, we reopened the Waikanae River Trail in time for the long weekend.

We closed the trail for safety reasons following the massive storm we experienced earlier this month. We've removed most of the fallen and damaged trees, but it is still very muddy on the north bank, and the short diversion between Weggery Drive and the Otaihanga footbridge is still in place.

Work to restore the track surface over the next few weeks will require partial track closures – thank you for following the instructions of our work crews.

This is just to say...

I have written
a poem by 3 July
for the libraries' competition

and which you were definitely
hoping
was on the subject of "Ten"

Forgive me, William Carlos Williams,
I borrowed your work
But it was fun
and 03 plus 07 equals ten.

Submissions close 3 July (03/07).
