We all know the story of Esther, right? She was a Jew, taken into exile in Persia. Queen Vashti displeased King Xerxes. Mordecai, who had adopted his cousin Esther as his own daughter, worked at the king’s gate. Esther won a beauty contest and become the new queen right before Haman’s plot to kill all the Jews in the empire took shape. It all “just happened” to work out perfectly for the Jews to be saved through Esther’s actions.
There are many lessons to learn from the life of Queen Esther and her story recorded in the Bible. Ultimately, she was able to use her status and position to save her people from certain destruction - at the risk of her own life! As Mordecai famously said, if she hadn’t done that, another would be raised up to save them, but perhaps everything in her life had worked out just this way in order for her to be the one in a position to do something.
As we studied the book of Esther together as a team, the Kenyan branch of Maisha Kamili considered our own status and position. We talked about the seemingly coincidental events that led to each of us being in Maisha Kamili. Then we asked, “Who in the community around us needs someone to speak up and/or take action on their behalf?”
