MKKs in 2022

The board of Maisha Kamili in Kilifi County, Kenya, met for Bible study and discussion in April, with a special guest.

Board Retreat

We all know the story of Esther, right? She was a Jew, taken into exile in Persia. Queen Vashti displeased King Xerxes. Mordecai, who had adopted his cousin Esther as his own daughter, worked at the king’s gate. Esther won a beauty contest and become the new queen right before Haman’s plot to kill all the Jews in the empire took shape. It all “just happened” to work out perfectly for the Jews to be saved through Esther’s actions.

There are many lessons to learn from the life of Queen Esther and her story recorded in the Bible. Ultimately, she was able to use her status and position to save her people from certain destruction - at the risk of her own life! As Mordecai famously said, if she hadn’t done that, another would be raised up to save them, but perhaps everything in her life had worked out just this way in order for her to be the one in a position to do something.

As we studied the book of Esther together as a team, the Kenyan branch of Maisha Kamili considered our own status and position. We talked about the seemingly coincidental events that led to each of us being in Maisha Kamili. Then we asked, “Who in the community around us needs someone to speak up and/or take action on their behalf?”

Opportunities

Currently, we have 2 students, still in primary school, who need more than school fees. They need a nanny to stay with them at home and take care of their day-to-day needs. They need lunch at school. Their school doesn’t serve lunch, but their principal, recognizing their needs, has offered to personally provide lunch for them if Maisha Kamili can pay for it. Gloria and Delia need $70 per month to pay for their caregiver and buy food for their school lunches. (That would be $35/month for each girl.)

Also, there are 6 new MKKs (all high schoolers) for 2022, plus a seventh new high school student who is a familiar face. They all need sponsors! You can help these kids and Delia and Gloria by giving via PayPal or by check (see the bottom of the email).

We have shared about these MKKs on our Facebook page. Here they are again, in case you missed it:

What Is God Doing?

The question we asked during our study of Esther (led by special guest Claire Wall) is one we try to ask ourselves periodically. The world around us is always changing: God is doing new things, and we may have a role to play. We need to keep our eyes open to see where God is inviting us to join his work.

Now, we challenge you to ask yourself the same. Where do you see God at work? What is he inviting you to? Who needs you to speak up or take action on their behalf? How has your life led you to being in a position to do something for someone in need? What can you do to join God at work?

Let’s pray together for eyes to see God at work and courage to take a leap of faith and join in!
