JULY 2022

President’s Message
Next event: - Sunday 3 July, Orange Botanic Gardens
As July is commonly cold and wet, we have decided to have an in-town event where there is some shelter for the time keepers, hence our next event is in the Orange Botanic Gardens. However, it will have some elements that make it rather different from usual. There will be a Pairs scatter event. Start is at 10.00am so don't be late.
Please book your place before the event so we have a idea of numbers for this event

Pairs event
You will be asked to pair up with another person. Each pair has the challenge of trying to visit all of the controls between them in the shortest time possible. There will be a mass start when the pairs will receive 2 maps of all controls and then decide who will visit which controls so all are visited between them. After going off to find their allocation of controls they meet at a final control before going to the finish and downloading to check if between them they have visited all the controls.
There will also be 2 separate line courses for people to try after the pairs event.
Matthew Slater is planning the line courses. Nick Wilmott will be organising the Pairs event

Reflections on Bush Series #4 - Sunday 19 June at Rocky Falls
The event had been postponed due to bad weather. Fortunately, the rescheduled day was fine, but cool. Clinton Russell and Anna Dowling did a great job in course setting and event organisation. Although the courses were excellent, the terrain for parts of the Moderate and Hard courses was physically challenging. This resulted in slow times and some people running out of time to complete their courses.

It was good to see the Jones family back orienteering. Matthew Slater raced round the Easy course having already done the Easy Moderate. Laura Lewis-Minogue showed her navigation prowess by winning the Easy Moderate.  Anthony Wharton won the Hard Moderate and had the fastest times on all but 2 legs.  Ayako Kusui and Trent Critchley are to be congratulated on finishing their courses despite getting lost and relocating in the difficult terrain. It was good to see Reddall Leslie back orienteering and showing he had not lost his navigation skills.  Rob Bennett won the Hard course with the fastest times on all but one of the legs.
Did you look at your splits?  The results for the event are in Eventor, thank you Clinton.  See
Eventor Australia - Event information: Goldseekers 2022 Bush #4 Rocky Falls (orienteering.asn.au)  When you Click on the Results list and have the results on your screen, you will see a little icon on the right with the words Split Times.  Click on this and you will be taken to Winsplits which is a program that gives you all your times between controls, compared to everyone else on your course.  The splits are often very interesting to see where you went well and where you lost time.

State League #7, #8 and #9 at Wagga
Sixteen Goldseekers members travelled to Wagga to compete in a major orienteering challenge over the Queen’s Birthday weekend. Orienteers from Queensland, Victoria, ACT and NSW competed in three events. Two events were held on challenging granite terrain in the Murraguldrie State Forest. The third event was at the Wagga campus of CSU. Times for the three events were added to determine final positions.
The Slater family were the stars of the club, winning two gold and two bronze awards in Senior and Junior classes.  Tim Slater was first in Mens Open B, Anna Dowling was first in Womens Open B.  Matthew did very well to come second in the competitive M12A class while his sister, Alexandra, was third in the W10A. Alexandra, aged 8, has only recently been completing courses on her own.
Other Goldseekers achievements were Clinton Russell, first in the M35AS class, Jean Baldwin, second in W75A and Basil Baldwin, second in M80A.  Rob Bennett ran well in the Men’s Elite class coming 6th overall with a 2nd place on the final day.
Overall results for multi day events are usually based on the accumulated times for each day. Unfortunately, Margaret Wilmott mispunched on the first day so that put her out off the overall result. However, you can still compete on the individual days. Laura Lewis Minogue did not compete on Day 2 and Anna Fitzgerald did not compete on Day3, so they did not have overall results.  Despite this they had some very good runs on individual days.
The challenge of the multi day event is to ensure you complete each day. It may be that one of your days may is bad, but you completed. You may still do well overall if others do not complete all days. This situation of attrition is not uncommon and can sometimes enable you to win, or be in the top placings.

I look forward to seeing you on Sunday. It is forecast to be fine.
