Coming Right Up

Memorial Minute for Mosi Harrington

On Sunday, July 3, at rise of meeting we will hear and consider a draft Memorial Minute for our Friend Mosi Harrington, in a special called Meeting for Worship for the Conduct of Business.  When the Meeting approves this minute, it will be sent to the Yearly Meeting, for inclusion with other Memorial Minutes from this year.

Many thanks to Lynn Hardesty, Amy Greene, Judith Goedeke and Charlie Goedeke for their work in compiling and publishing so many memories of Mosi.  The resulting booklet became the foundation for the proposed Memorial Minute.

And for the Children ...

Children's Summer Program -  On the 1st through 3d Sunday each month, children of grade-school age will have their own program, with games, crafts and perhaps some surprises.  Usually, the children join their families for about the first 20 minutes of meeting, and then leave with their adult leaders for their program. They will be returned to their parents at the rise of meeting.

Junior Meeting - On the 4th Sunday each month, there's a treasured opportunity for children ages 5 to 11 to meet together in worship, accompanied by a few adult Friends.  Meeting begins at 10:00, either in the memorial garden, or in the white house if needed for inclement weather.

For the younger children, ages 0 through kindergarten, the Nursery opens from 10 a.m. to 11:30 each Sunday in the white house.

First Friday Film Discussion is Second Friday this Month

Join us Friday July 8, the second Friday in July at 7:00pm for a discussion of the 2020 film, "Cowboys." (Link for the discussion will be in Friday's Silent Announcements.)

Plot summary:  Trans boy Joe's troubled but well-intentioned father, Troy, takes off with him into the Montana wilderness, pursued by police, after his wife, Sally, from whom he has recently separated, refuses to let Joe live as his authentic self. See the trailer here. The film is available on Kanopy and Hoopla for free, and other streaming services for a nominal fee.

Meeting's Business

Draft minutes from the June 12 meeting for business are available here for your reference and corrections. Please send any corrections to recordingclerk@adelphifriends.org.

Zoom Hosts: We still need one or two more volunteers to help with the technical side of managing blended meetings (virtual and in-person.)  If you offer, you will receive training and coaching from current Zoom hosts. After trying your hand at it a few times, you'll have a new skill with many uses in our "new normal" world.  Please contact Cheryl Morden via Breeze.

A Back-Up Editor:  Have you been thinking about how you'd like to be a back-up editor for Silent Announcements?  (Did you think that maybe several people had already volunteered, and so you shouldn't say anything?) Well, you are in luck.  The opening is still open!  Please contact Ruth Flower via Breeze if interested in being trained to do (very) occasional substitute editing, and to take on a few editions in mid-October.  Complete instructions and coaching provided.

Past issues of Silent Announcements are available here.

Teaching Universal Human Dignity

June 30, 2022 at 3 p.m. ET

Many of you know that Chloe Schwenke is very active in advocating for the human dignity of LGBTQI+ people around the world. On Thursday, June 30th she will be speaking at the Center for Strategic and International Studies at 3pm ET. This event brings together the two top officials in the US Government on LGBTQI+ issues internationally, and two "civil society representatives''.

Chloe will be trying to broaden the discussion beyond the civil and political rights discourse as framed in diplomatic terms to embrace a wider, less legalistic, and more morally direct consideration of universal human dignity (aka "that of God in every one"), and of ethical concerns that speak to a "truly human" quality of life.

Mmm...Homemade Pupusas

New details

Carol Nezzo is supporting a friend, Veronica, who makes pupusas in her home for sale.  Many years ago, the meeting helped support Veronica's efforts to free her brother from detention in Arizona.  Her brother has now been granted  political asylum -- but the pupusa tradition lives on!

The next opportunity is Saturday, July 2 at 3 p.m., when you can pick up your order of delicious pupusas. Veronica is offering three kinds of pupusas -- beans and cheese, zucchini with cheese, and spinach with cheese.

To order, at just $2.25 each,
(1) Send Carol Nezzo an e-mail with your order (at cnezzo@gmail.com).  Specify how many of each kind of pupusa you would like, and please include your contact information.
(2) Then drop off a check or cash for the amount of your order to Carol's house at 4600 Amherst Road, College Park  (one traffic light north of Whole Foods.)

Place your order soon -- Veronica does have limits on how many of these delicious items she can make!

How We Meet For Worship

On Sunday mornings, we gather in a "blended" meeting at 10 am:  In the meeting house and on Zoom.  For those attending virtually,  here is the Zoom link for Sunday worship and second hours. For those attending in person, masks and vaccinations are still required, to protect the vulnerable among us. Also, we can't sing in the meeting room.  Please see the general guidelines here for everyone who enters the meetinghouse for worship.

On Sunday mornings at 8:45 and at 10:00, there is an outdoor meeting in the Memorial Garden. These meetings are not 'blended" with the Zoom-and-indoor-meeting. (At 10:00 on the 4th Sunday of each month, we meet behind the meetinghouse, to leave the Memorial Garden available for Junior Meeting.

On Sunday evenings at 7 pm, Adelphi Meeting convenes an on-line meeting for worship. Here is the Zoom link for that meeting. (Meeting ID is 823 9626 3173 and passcode is 734636).

On Wednesdays at noon, Adelphi Meeting convenes a midweek meeting for worship for healing with a concern for a broken nation. Here is the recurring link to the Wednesday noon meetings.

Takoma Park Friends Meeting Preparative meets on Sundays in-person indoors at 11:30 am and by Zoom at 7:30 pm. On Thursdays at 6:30 pm, Friends meet in-person outdoors (weather permitting).

See more details for all these gatherings, including Takoma Park Friends gatherings, in this attachment.
