Consistory Update

 Hey Friends,

Last week Tuesday, June 21, The Consistory of Third Reformed Church held their monthly meeting. We opened with devotions out of Galatians 1:1-5 about how God the Father wanted Jesus to come into this world and rescue us from our broken ways. We then prayed that God help us remain in the will of God through Jesus Christ our Lord.

As it was our June meeting, we were privileged to welcome some new members to our meeting and we approved the motion that re-elected Linda Jacobs to the office of Vice President and welcomed Meg Frens to the office of Clerk. Thanks to both of them for serving in this way. We also took a moment to thank Ben Lichtenwalner for his years of service as Clerk.

We then received an update from Linda Jacobs about her time at General Synod and we continued in prayer for our denomination. She pointed us to the missional direction that was laid out by Eddy Aleman regarding the future of the RCA being one that is more diverse and spans cultures. Linda noted how similar that was to the future of TRC and how we have a lot to offer one another in this regard. It should be noted that Eddy is scheduled to preach here at TRC on October 30th. He will preach the 10 a.m. and the 11:15 El Encuentro services. Thank you, Linda, for attending on behalf of TRC!
We then heard an update on the HVAC system that needs to be replaced. Amy Lunn updated us on pricing that has risen significantly since our last consistory approval. The quote is now $960,000, up from $750,000 last fall. Consistory was reminded of the needs of our current system and voted to approve the quote from Plune, our servicer. (After this meeting some questions came from the congregation about having a meeting to hear more about the matters of replacing the HVAC as well as offering some input and questions. Therefore, there will be an informational meeting on Sunday July 17th at 4pm to offer a time for the congregation to hear more about this project.)

Finally, we heard about some staffing updates and how the TRC staff is working to address the staffing needs of our congregation. More information will come on that. But we gave thanks for Reghan coming on staff and for the work our staff are doing to serve our congregation.

We closed in prayer. We continue to covet your prayers as a consistory and give thanks for the good work being done here at TRC.

Walk-In Choir

This summer the choir will sing on four Sundays, July 10, July 24, August 14 and August 21 at the 10am worship service. YOU are invited to join for one or all four Sundays. Rehearsal will begin promptly at 9:30am in the choir room in the lower level each of those weeks. ALL ages are invited to participate, including whole families or multi-generational family members. The choir offertory will be simple enough that anyone will be able to sing along. If you have always wanted to try out the choir this is your chance! Just show up, no need to let anyone know you are coming, there will be music for you, whoever you are! If you are nervous about coming by yourself, let Linda know (strouf@hope.edu) and she will find someone to be your “choir buddy” for the day.

Micro-Pantry is Full

—Beverley Rannow

THANK YOU SO MUCH TO EVERYONE WHO HAS CONTRIBUTED FOOD TO THE MICRO PANTRY! At this time, thanks to all of you, we have enough food to stock the Micro Pantry for a while. Please hold off bringing additional items for the present. We will let know via the newsletter and bulletin when we are in need of more items and what items we are running low on. Again Thank You!!

Summer Series - Galatians: Growing Up Together

We will spend the summer in Paul’s letter to the Galatian churches. The summer series comes with a study guide created just for Third, and it has something for you every week that we hope will help you get deep into this letter that Paul is writing to local churches that he cares about. See you on Sunday!

Como Se Dice? / How Do You Say?

Reciprocal Conversational Language Sessions @ Summer LIFT!

Wednesdays, June 29-August 3, 2022

One of the most common suggestions staff has been getting lately is that TRC needs more opportunities for conversational language learning, for English, and/or Spanish!  Another frequent comment we hear is, how could we get to know our Spanish-speaking neighbors and new congregants better? Well, we hear you!

This summer, on Wednesdays from 6:30 to 7:30pm following our community dinners at Summer LIFT, we will run a pilot of Beginner’s “Reciprocal” language classes.  The Reciprocal model means that small groups (2-4 persons) of Spanish and English speakers will be presented with a common topic and teach each other the most useful phrases from their own language, with the help of a worksheet, small group activity, and facilitation of bilingual teacher/leaders.   This model levels the playing field between teachers and students, and is a great means of getting acquainted!

The topics will be very practical:
  • Greetings
  • Telling Time
  • Making Plans & Appointments
  • Food & Parties!
  • Words and Phrases for Worship & Church life
We look forward to exploring language learning together, as well as discovering new friendships along the way!  If you are interested in participating, please email the church office or sign up via this link, so that we can prepare well for the numbers of participants.  If you have questions, please contact Pastor Janelle at janelle.lopezk@trcholland.org.

Informational Congregational Meeting about Our HVAC Proposal

There will be an informational congregational meeting on Sunday, July 17, at 4:00 PM to review the state of our current heating and cooling equipment and the bid for new equipment from Pleune Service Company. A representative from Pleune will be there, as well as members of the property committee, and we will present some options for moving forward with the project. This will be a chance to ask questions and learn more about the physical state of our church building. All congregational members are invited.
