Free Independence Day yard signs available at Elgin City Hall

Residents can pick up yard signs promoting neighbor-friendly holiday celebrations at City Hall through Friday, July 1

Elgin, IL - The City of Elgin has free yard signs available to the public with messaging encouraging friendly, neighborly celebrations this Independence Day weekend and discouraging the use of fireworks. The signs, in English on one side and Spanish on the reverse side, can be picked up from the lobby of City Hall, located at 150 Dexter Court, from Wednesday, June 29 through Friday, July 1 during open hours from 8:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m.

Fire Chief Robb Cagann reminds the community that fireworks are dangerous and can result in serious injuries. "More than 19,000 injuries occur every year with trips to the emergency room. Most of those occur to the face, head, eyes and fingers.”

In addition to being dangerous, fireworks are illegal in Elgin, and residents can be fined simply for letting others ignite fireworks on their property. Fines range from $100 to $750.

"We want everyone to have a safe and fun holiday weekend," said Police Chief Ana Lalley. "Leave the fireworks to the professionals, and come gather with the community at the City's free concert and fireworks display on Monday evening."
